I have searched for a reliable way to kill primers, since I have a small batch that is beginning to look old with hints of verdigris on some of them. Contrary to what you might read or hear people say, oil won't reliably kill primers. Older tests, including one or more by the Right Honourable Mr. Saed (1993) conclude that neither water nor oil, WD-40 or other penetrating types, will render a primer harmless. They will become unreliable, though.

So here I am. I want to kill some primers. Any ideas?

I think lawndart just takes a hammer to them out on the driveway.

If you are really dedicated about doing away with them, load them into an empty case (without a charge of powder nor ball) and pop them in the proper weapon. If you're not that dedicated, give them a flush.

is this some kind of joke? campfires were made for this sort of thing. throw in a handful and step back.

I don't know what the military uses to "deactivate" their primers, but it works 100%.

I bought a thousand 30 carbine cases with deactivated primers. They looked ok, and there was no oil on or in the case, so I grabbed 10 and tried to fire them in my carbine. None went off.

When I deprimed them and pried them apart, the priming mixture was damp with something that was mildly oily but had no odor. When I held a match to the primer mixture it burned but did not flare up in any way.

Perhaps you could find what the military uses to deactivate primers on some obscure website.

Put them in a plastic pail put salt water on them for a few days , they're worthless after that . Not even Lawn Dart could hurt himself unless he screws up with the hammer and smashes his finger !. H A H A ...

Put a few 20 or less in a can of oil for a few days (small amount of oil) Light it and stand back some will go off like firecrackers but when its done burning the primers will be spent. Wear eye protection and stand way back until fire goes way out for at least 10 minutes. Be very careful as some could still go off when still hot. Do this in a place that wont cause a fire or make the cops respond as it will make some noise ( especially the shotgun primers. a juice can works well ( some still may flyout like missles be careful )
