A "baited hook" for Gerard

Gerard,
I have but a few pelts hanging on my belt but, after listening to some of the "old hands" around here and reading your excellent exposes and dissertations, I have come to the conclusion that the GS bullets are the way to go. The problem I am left with is which bullet weight should I use? Here are my three cases:

Cartridge Game weight range
6.5x55 Swede 100-175 lbs 100-250 yds
30-06 100-175 lbs 100-250 yds
35 Whelen
Improved 150-300 lbs 100-300 yds

I have attained approximately 2800 fps with 225 gr Nosler BTs on the Whelen.

Here's a little more camoflage for the trap. As you have stated, a new set of rules have arrived and we are working with assumptions from the first half of the previous century. The reloading manuals out are equivalent to using the Marquis de Queensbury Rules when heading out for a fight.
Now that I have set the bait, here's the hook. It would be quite valuable to find most of the basic information, essential to the successful operation of your bullets, contained within a book. I would happily purchase a copy or two. Honestly, I'm a sucker for a good loading manual. A compendium of recommended bullet weights for the popular rounds for the various classes of game and some starting load info would be great.
By the way, I hope to have an order once I figure which cartridge to try first and recover from Christmas. I have an unfired CZ550 in 30-06 begging to be first.

Happy New Year to everyone!

Unfortunately I'll be working the night shift again this year.

Eric

Howdy Eric,
What are the twist rates of the three rifles?

The twist rates are as follows:

6.5x55 1-10
.35 Whelen Imp 1-12
30.-06 factory CZ550, I'll have to look this one up somewhere

Mauser416,

Just curious about your 35Whellen Imp...what length barrel does it have and what sort of velocities would you expect for bullets in the 250grn -300grn range...

just trying to work out how this round compares with the 9.3x62...

thanks Peter

The CZ will probably be 1:12 but if it measures one in ten, it is a bonus. There is no twist info at the CZ website so measuring would be the best way, unless it is in the literature that came with the rifle.

6.5x55 - use the 95 gr HV at 3300 fps.
35 Whelen Improved - 220 gr HV at 2750 in a 35 Whelan, in the Imp, the extra 15 grains of case capacity should be good for about 150 fps more.
30-06 - 150 gr HV at 3200 fps

A reloading manual from GS Custom is quite a way off into the future still. We develop one and a half new bullets a month and that will continue for a while. When the HV and FN ranges are more or less complete, there are the hunting handgun and target bullets to develop. A manual would be obsolete in three or four months and as much work to compile as the website information so for the moment, we will have to stay with the website load data.

Gerard, was interested to learn that there's now a 95 gr HV in .264. But I can't navigate your home-page, there seems to be some problem with the links from the first page.

Wachtel,
The home page is hosted on our server in SA and the site is hosted on a server in the USA. Looks like the USA end is down. I will try to contact them to see what the problem is.

Site is up again 18:57

Gerard, thanks for the info. I placed my order today. The 30-06 won out.

Pete E I would figure about 2600 or so with a 250 gr. I haven't loaded anything other than the 225 Nosler BT. From what I can find, the 9.3 and Whelen are quite similar as far as case capacities go. I wanted to build a 9.3 initially but decided on the Whelen because of ammo availability.
