I just picked up a box of Speer 285gr Grand Slam bullets to put together a semi-universal moose, bear, elk load. I am really partial to Swift A-Frames and Noslers, but have no experience with the Speers. Just thought I would give them a try as I have not dialed in the ultimate accuracy, etc load. Anyone out there with experience with the Speer GS?

Lefty,
My only experience w/ the GS was w/ their factory stuff. I bought a box to try in my #1H & while the velocity was very good (2675fps from the 24"bbl.) accuracy wasn't up to the Nosler or even the Barnes 'X'. I didn't investigate any further. I've had good results w/ other caliber GS in other rifles though.
Load them as you would 300gr NP & work up from there. Good luck, what are you shooting them out of?

I really don't have much experience with the 285 gr Speers, but as to powders, RE15 seems to be about tops for most rifles in 375 H&H. Mine also likes IMR 4350 and Varget. Swift 270's work well with re 15. I think some manuals say max at 74 grains but some go as high as 76. Mine loves that 76 grain load but as with any load that is above anyones documented maximum, work up slowly and carefully. IMR 4350 at 75 gr and 270 gr SAF's work well for me. The Hornaday 270 gr and 72 gr Varget worked for me. That is not what you asked for but should give you some starting data. If going up in bullet weight go down in powder weight. Win 760 78 gr and the 300 gr Hornadays are Mik 375 's favorite load. Consult the Speer manual. Mine is at my loading bench and not here for now. If you want me to check on it I will. If you are going to use much of Speer's bullets you might want to get the manual. Good luck. "D"

fredj338,

I am shooting a LH Remington KS Mountain rifle in .375 H&H with a McMillan HTG stock, 24" barrel, and a Leupold 1.5x5 scope. It is light enough to carry all day and the stock really soaks up the felt recoil.

Lefty Hunter,
I have settled on a max load of RL-15 as the ultimate powder for the 375 H&H with about any bullet.....for my guns.
