todbartellPrimer color - gold or silver
Checking my primer stock, I'm down to 200. Need to buy some more.
Got a question.
The CCI's I'm using are silver, but I've seen primers that are gold or bronze color. What make are these?
Could somebody who has current primers tell me the color of the following:
CCI - 200 or 250
Federal 210 or 215
Remington - 9 1/2
Winchester - WLR or WLRM
I'm talking the color of the outside of the primer, not the explosive insides.

Dago Redthe brass colored primers you see are factory loaded ammunition. I don't believe there are any primers available for reloading that aren't silver in color.

Cold BoreNow there's a scientific approach to load development.... picking primers based on color.

The only primers I use that are not gold/brass colored are CCI.
It's only adifference between brass or nickel plated brass just like cases. Doesn't mean anything . Soryy no gold or other exotics.

Dago RedWow, I guess I should look at more than the federal and cci that I use. Thanks for the info.

todbartellThanks for the replies.
I like the look of a brass or gold colored primer, and I don't think I could tell the diff. between the various makes, maybe if I was using a 223 or something small.
Thanks again.

KenatiThis has no relevence to the topic, but...
I like to use the silver colored primers. Why? 'Cause I'm a real clutz around the bench sometimes, so I started marking the primers of the cases loaded with the same charge of powder with a permanent marker... a different color marker used for varying charges.
This let's me sort 'em back out if I knock over the box (remember... I said I was a clutz)
But besides that, it just helps me keep them separated for inspection and other trivial tasks.
Just some (tasteless) food for thought!

Alex V.It seems like all of the Winchester pistol primers have been a brass color for about 4 or maybe 5 years now. The cartons that held 10 packets of 100 primers were marked on the outside with something like "New finish for easier use" or something like that.
A commercial reloader told me that his CCI primers which were not intended for resale to reloaders would often not have the nickel finish.
