Please, let me know yours experiences with reloads of .30-06, 18" barrel versus 24" barrel.
Velocity lost?
I have a new rifle -Garand- and I think to cut their barrel to 18", for use in dense bush, for use when hunt pecaries (wild small pigs).

Hector,
You will loose about one percent per inch velocity, compared to 24 inch, so a loss af about 6%. Maybe the last two inches shorter barrel than 20" even more than 1% per inch. That's important for your trajectory.
Other drawbacks: more muzzle flame, more report for your ears.

Works fine other than loud.

Had a buddy who used a takedown (way before they were all the rage) in .30/06 Sprg. and he took the thing around the world in a breifcased sized gun case. The Trophies he took sure didn't seem to notice the apparent resulting loss in performance.

From a 26" barrel cut off at 1" increments to 18" the loss of 38-52fps is the norm per inch.So, with 8" difference it would be from 304fps to 416fps loss. van

It will be very loud. Also, shortening a Garand requires major modification because of the gas sytem. Very difficult and expensive.

isn't that after the "tanker" version? there is a fella somewheres that is pretty familiar with doing the work-I'd have to dig around. I too have a M1 Garand and am loading now and keeping muzzle pressure right around 8200psi per QL. Got to keep the op-rod from bending there Mr. Roveda.

I know the convertion it's difficult but I have two option with a good local gunsmithing: cut the barrel and gas barrell and make all neccesary works to good function or buy the kid of convertion to Garand Tanker in .30-06 or in .308 win.
For your answered this caliber lost very much velocity in this lenght (18").
In .308 Win lost less velocity with 18" barrel: I have a Mauser Stutzen in this caliber and 18" barrel and reload for it with goods velocity 180 gr bullets / 2.494 fts and 165 gr bullets / 2.577 fts.

A hunting buddy of mine years ago used a Mod. 760, 30-06, with an 18" barrel for everything including bear and Elk. He and his rifle were totally awesome.A short barrel didn't handycap him in the least. The slide action gave him a quick second shot but I never saw him use that second shot. roger

grizz007 made reference to being careful with port pressure to keep from bending the op rod. Unless you use a very slow burning powder, the Navy armorers found that bending the op rod (slightly) had less affect on accuracy with the .308 than with the .30-06. Just an "Oh, by the way".
