popenmann, I don't understand your claims on the Hodgdon data. I'm looking at my 2004 Annual, and the rifle fps seems to be above the pistol in nearly every entry. One exception I saw was 158 gn jacketed over their fastest tested powder; but there, sloppy cartridge handling could cause fps variations due to the charge being away from the primer. For the slower, case filling powders, the fps seems to always favor the rifle tests. On the whole, the rifle fps doesn't seem all that much higher, but it is quite possible that Hodgdon's pistol data is in a 10" barrel with a nice, tight, SAAMI spec chamber with the rifle data taken in some old 18.5" Winchester carbine. I also don't see why you question Hodgdon's pressure and fps relations. Without a crusher rig, one can't duplicate their tests. You also wouldn't know if the true pressures corresponding to Hodgdon's CUP data are actually higher or lower than you might find in testing with strain gauges. Again, I think there is good reason to believe the true pressures in Hodgdon's test ran over SAAMI's 35 ksi limit while staying under SAAMI's 45 kCUP. I see no reason to believe that 35 ksi piezo is the same true pressure as 45 kCUP. | |||
