Can I use magnum pistol primers in a .38 special by reducing the charge? If so how much should I reduce the load?

Sure you can, not req'd but you can substitute. The reduction will depend on the powder & charge wt. If you are loading a med. burner like Unique & not near max. I don;t feel a reduction is needed (based on my own chronograph results). For a faster powder like HP38/W231, I would reduce 2-3%, about 0.2gr.

5.4 grs and a 158 gr bullet is a pretty stout 38 spcl load. I`d back off if you switch primers.

Do you think backing off to 5grs would be sufficient?
