I am looking for a good powder for the 223 rem using 55 gr. v-max moly. I prefer to use a spherical powder like H-335 or BL-C2 for its metering characteristics. However, I have heard from a couple of people that these powders are relatively temp. sensitive. Has anyone experienced this? For those using shortcut extruded powders like benchmark or varget, how do they meter?

I have had great luck with W 748.

BL-C(2) has been my powder of choice.....yes...it's a bit sensitive to temps and I had to cut it back a grain. I've been shooting in temps over 100 deg with no sweat!

Where do you find W-748. I checked the winchester site a few days ago and they said hodgon took over production. I clicked the link to the hodgon site, but could not find the powder

I've had good luck with Varget and 55gr bullets; it's consistent in a place where the temp can vary from 38° like today, to 115°+ in the summer. I've also found a really accurate load using H335 and 40gr V-Max, but have only shot it in hot weather.

All ball powders are more sensitive to wether conditions. BLC-lot 2 use to be the mpowder the military used. Varget does work.accurate 2230 i have heard is good. I use accurate 2200(not avaiable now)Also accurate 2230C which use to me MR223 another military powder. van

molar 1: I bought a pound a couple of months ago from Powder Valley. I hope it's not the last pound. It took me a long time to work up my 223 load.

I believe you .....however I've loaded for six .223 rifles and can say for a fact that just about any (reasonable) powder delivers excellent accuracy.

I;d venture that there's a dozen or more powders that make the 223 sing very well. It's an easy one to load.

In addition to Winchester 748, I had very good results in the .223 with Hodgdon Benchmark. That one is available from Hodgdon, and it meters well.

Benchmark is my favourite in 223. I have two guns it works very well in. Varget takes up too much volume for 223 and lighter bullets.
However I use a 25 grain varget 52 A-Max load that is a tad slow but blisteringly accurate.

I get more velocity with H335 over IMR4895 in 55 gr .223 moly, but I get more accuracy with the IMR4895.

Everyone else seems to get good accuracy with the H335, I don't know what MY problem is.

I have had good luck the RL-7 in my .223. In fact my experience with the RL line has caused me to investigate using some of their other powders for my larger calibers.

I got good accuracy with 27 grains of RL15 out of my H/R ultra, The load is in one if alliants older books, Cant find much data on rl 15 for 223, it fills the cases up which takes a little more time to load, I loaded some with H322 but havnt got to the range yet. When you say temp sensative does that mean that loads will shoot different when its about 10 degres out, maybe that will be my excuse for missed fox's

Anything in burning rate between IMR-4198 on the fast side and IMR-4320 on the slow side will do well in the .223. H-335 (spec WC-844) was designed for the 5.56 (military designation of the .223) and works extremely well in it. However, so will BL-C2 (spec WW 748 & WC-846), IMR & H-4895, the 4064's, and about twenty other powders.

My personal choice is H-335, but several others could make me just as happy.

All powders exhibit some degree of temperature sensitivity. It is only recently that advertising hype has made this an issue. Load to a reasonable level and just shoot. You won't see that much difference in any of the powders.

I also like WW748, but now mostly use VihtaVuori N133 which they load in the 5.56mm NATO cartridge. Not temp sensitive as I have chronographed it both winter and summer.

Graf's sells 748 for $18.59 per pound. Neither you no I can buy direct from Winchester(Olin) or Hodgdon.
