I bought 200 rounds of Norma brass in 7mm remington mag for $40.00 about year ago and it is stamped Weatherby and I was told it was Norma all the way and there no difference between Weatherby stamped or Norma. Right I'am in the process of rebarreling my Win 70 classic stainless to a 7mm remington ultra magnum and was told that the action was too short, so how about a 7mm STW, nope still too short. So I've been thinking what am I going to do all these Norma and fired brass that I have! So how about a .257 remington magnum or something like a 7mm improved remington magnum and buy another rifle in .338 Remington ultra magnum and use the win 70 for deer and antelope. So my question is, is there such thing as a 7mm improved remington magnum or a .257 remington magnum? I can't find reload information on either one. If either one exist, what are the velocity?

norseman, whoever told you the winchester M70 action was too short for the 7mm stw is incorrect. The M70 action is the same length for the 30-06, 270, 7mm rem mag, 7mm stw, 300 win mag, 300 weatherby mag, etc. There is some difference between the bolt stops of the 7mm stw, 300 wby mag and the short mags but the parts are easily replaced. Your stainless M70 action will work for the stw.

Boltman,

Not sure that you are correct. I had a look at a set of 4 Win Model 70 Classics - They were in calibres .300 H&H; .300 Weatherby; .300 Win Mag ; . 338 Win Mag. The rear part of the receivers on the .300 * .338 Win Mag were longer than on the .300 H&H & .300 Weatherby. So may be a bit more work to get them to work than just bolt stops.

The bolt may be the same length, this I am not sure.

Norseman. There is EXTREMELY little NEW of any additional value to expliot with these old cases, everything has been done, long ago. IF you want a wc of your own, make one (I will), but it wont add much to anything. The 257/7mm Rem Mag would be a 257 Weatherby, the H&H Mag case has been squeezed, necked up, shortened, improved, to EVERYTHING, the "new" Rem Ultra is a necked down improved 404 Jeffery, the "new" Win Short Mag is a necked down 404 Jeffery Improved Short... But it IS fun AKI

I've built 4 7 STWs on the Model 70. It is very simple. The spacer in the magazine box needs to be removed and the ejector and bolt stop need to be shortened. By far the easiest way is to simple order the replacement parts from Winchester. Ask for the parts for a 300 WBY and you are all set. The 300 WBY is the same length as the STW.

Don't know much about the chambering question, but if you want to get rid of your brass let me know.

John T, the M70 classic receivers are the same length on the four rifles you saw but there are several differences between the 300 win mag/338 win mag receiver and the 300 weatherby receiver which is called the express version. The express version is used with the 300 weatherby, 375 H&H, 7mm stw, and 416 remington from the factory. In addition to the bolt stop being different the magazine doesn't have the spacer that the shorter rounds have, the follower is longer, and the loading port opening is cut 3/8" farther to the rear than on the standard action. The longer loading port is the reason the rear part of the receivers appeared different but they are in fact the same length and the bolts would interchange between the normal and express action. Given the choice I'd use the express action to build a 7mm stw because it already has all the parts in place and would require a lot less work. I used a 300 weatherby M70 when I built my 7mm stw so there wasn't anything to change. I have not done it but I have heard of many others building 7mm stw's, 300 wby's etc. on the normal action by swapping all the parts I mentioned. What you have when it's all done is the same as an express action but the loading port cut-out isn't as long as on the express action. I haven't heard of anyone having any trouble with this short loading port, everyone I've heard of has said it still works fine.

After reading all of this stuff about differences in Model 70's I had to go downstairs and do some comparing. My Model 70 Winlite in 300 Weatherby has the same loading port length as my brother's Model 70 Westerner in 7 Rem Mag. The M70-Weatherby magazine is without the spacer and the bolt travels open further(shorter bolt stop). The screw spacing on the rear bridge is the same.My 300 Weatherby reciever is stamped WB(or maybe it's WBY,can't remember)on the bottom. Both rifles are "push-feed".Looks like some Model 70-300 Weatherbys use the "Express" action and some don't. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that my rifle is a "Winlite" model?.signed: "curious in Canada"
