I am going to be getting into reloading in the next few weeks for my Savage 114 30-06. I would like to start with 165 grain Hornady bullets, Federal #210 Large Rifle primers, and IMR-4350 or H4350 powder. Do you think this would make a decent load? What kind of groups do you think I could get? Do you have a recipe like this or any other good 30-06 receipes? Thanks

You have the basics for a top load. With either powder, 57 to 58.5 gr. should get you there. XMR 4350 also works. You'll have to work hard to improve on it unless your rifle has its own mind.

Hi Joel, Congrats on getting into re-loading..I think you are really going to enjoy it. The 30-06 is a great round and very re-loader freindly...most 30-06's will shoot a wide variety of bullets and powders very well... Now remember, each rifle is different and you are going to have to find which loads your particular weapon likes and shows no pressure signs etc... I prefer the 180 gr bullets in the 30-06...I have had great success with 180 gr sierra game kings and 59grs of h4831sc or 59 grs of RL-19. Good luck and good experimenting...you will find a bullet weight and powder charge your rifle really likes. Cheers!

Using a 165gr bullet and 4350, start out around 55 grains and if everything looks okay ease up a little at a time to 57 grains, maybe 57.5. Then pick your best group by accuracy. The few feet per second gain you'd make by going over that ain't gonna kill the whatever any deader.

I've used 50.0 grains of IMR-4064 + 150 grain bullet, in my Ruger M-77 .30-06, and found this to be the most accurate load, in my rifle. Any bullet weight over 150 grains I've used IMR-4350. David

anything short of 180 is a little light in my book for a 30-06. but i often see that being popular nowdays. something to do with trajectory i suppose. if you get conned into buying some 200's try 43.5 Gr H4895. nice little push and a whap on the other end.

You're going to love reloading. It is the most rewarding hobby I have. And it pays off with some great ammo. Good luck. Red C. Everything I say is fully substantiated by my own opinion.

Try 180 grain bullets and 60 to 61 or so of R22. YMMV. it's a fresh wind that ... Blows Against the Empire

Welcome Joel. This is a very addictive hobby. You can't stop with just one (gun, bullet, powder, etc) In my old but very accurate 700 ADL, 57.7gr of IMR 4350 with 165gr Hornady SP gave me less than .5 groups. The rifle also shoots 1/2 MOA with several other powders using that same bullet.

In my 3006's I like Hodgdon H-414 with a 165 grain Speer SPBT bullet. I get groups under MOA and consistancy over a broad range of conditions. I also like that it flows easly in my powder measures - thrown charges are always more accurate with my measures than weighed charges. Speer, Sierra, Lyman, Hornady, Hodgdon have reliable reloading data. You won't find it on so and so's web page.

I think you`re off to a good start, I use H4350 with both 165/168 gr and 180 gr bullets from Hornady or Nosler. For some reason My Sauer 200 seems to prefer IMR4350 over Hodgon with 150 Hornady SPs as its most accurate load though. ------------------------------------ The trouble with the Internet is that it's replacing masturbation as a leisure activity. ~Patrick Murray "Why shouldn`t truth be stranger then fiction?
