Guys I just need some of your recommendations for me 270 weatherby mag. FOr the powder that is. I used only factory loads in mine so far. Yes I know its sad but they are accurate and very fast.
I have a 270 weatherby mag in a Vanguard VGX with a 24 inch barrel. I don't know if its a fast barrel or not but with factory 150 Sp weatherby ammo I get 3245-3250 fps over my chrono everytime.
I plan on finding one bullet for it and be done with it. Its going to be the everything bullet from deer in PA to elk mule deer caribou and lopes out west. I do have other rifles but just want to find one bullet.
My bullet choices are 140 gr Failsafe, or barnes TSX in I think its 130 gr or if available in 140 or 150 grains. Either one of these that I can get to shoot straight I will be happy with.
Thanks for the info.

Three powders come to mind. Norma MRP, H-4831 and Rl-22 ( the equal of MRP). If you can get a hold of an old "Weatherby guide," ( the last printing was in 1985) there was a goldmine of reloading info, including "factory equivalent loads" using MRP and either Hornady Interlocks or Nosler Partitions ( the only two bullets loaded by Weatherby back then)> I can attest to the validity of the loads as my reloads shoot to the same POI as factory. jorge

Thanks jorge, I was wondering if other powders were as good as MRP was a couple years ago. I just thought that with the newer powders out there, there would be other options.
While I am asking, give me your bullet recommendations for this gun. I like the 140 or 150 grains to shoot thanks.

My best results were with IMR 7828. RL 19 was too fast, RL 22 was O.K., and H1000 was much faster than anticipated. I never used much H 870, and MRP is too hard to come by.
Mostly I focused on the 140 grain bullets, with XBT's and Hornady's BTSP producing the best results. With the newer XLC's and TSX's, I am sure the picture has changed much.

445: I have tried 7828 on my 300 Weatherby with fairly good results in accuracy ( less than MOA). However, I stick to MRP because I can duplicate factory bullets exactly so why bother with anything else. As far as bullet recommendation, it depends on what game you intend to hunt. I use the 140gr bullets more than others, but I recognize that the optimum bullet is closer to 150-160grains or. The 140s come screaming out of the barrel, so I would be careful with standard bullets on anything other than deer. A good reliable source of MRP is Graf and Sons. They have a website. God luck, jorge

Jorge, Thanks for that info. I am going to search my own hunting stores around here for MRP and also give 7828 a good shot too.
I think I am going to try the 140 gr TSX and see what I can do with this bullet. I might also see what I can do with speer TBBC and see what it does also.
Thanks for all the info guys it is much appreciated

Thanks Dan, I also got 2 lbs of Reloader 25 too. So far I just ordered on grafs 2 lbs of Reloader 25, 2 lbs of Imr 7828 and 2 lbs of MRP and Imr 4831 2lbs of it too but some is for my 7mm rem mag and my 338 win mag so I should be covered and I also got 1000 federal 215 primers so I think I will be set for a while.
Oh ordered some Barnes 140 gr TSX and 140 GR TBBC to see how these do.
Thanks for all the help guys

I use IMR-7828 in my .300 Wthby and in loading for my friend's .300 Wthby and .270 Wthby. We actually got almost 3600 FPS with 130 gr Hornady's with that powder out of his 26-inch barrel. No pressure signs and it was right at the book maximum load. (We worked up to it.) He must have a "fast" barrel. We went with 150 Nosler partitions, though, as he can shoot them plenty fast and flat, and use that one load for everything.
73.5 Re 25 has worked real good in a friends 270 with 150 hornady. (This is a warm load as 74 starts getting hard bolt lift). In my 270 wby 72 of I7828 with a `140 swift a frame has been magical. Start a little lower and work up. YOU DID ORDER THE RIGHT POWDERS!!

jorge, Hey you referred in an earlier post on the weatherby guide. Well I was just looking through a reloading book not a relaoding manual but just a basic book on the how to's or reloading and in the back of the book it listed all the weatherby loads factory and others. I am so glad I found it. Thanks for that info or I would never of looked for it as its an old book that doesn't get read much.

We never chrono'd my friends gun that likes the RE25. But with my gun I was getting 3330 with the 140's and 72.0 of I7828--BUT I was using Rem 7mm weatherby brass (no longer available)that was necked down to .270. That brass had a few grains less capacity than regular weatherby brass. At 3330 the primer pockets were expanding quickly--3-4 reloads was it so as you approach that speed watch for pressure. I had no problem with bolt lift but I know I'm on the edge. I was also able to load those a-frames down to about 3000 fps for wisconsin whitetail hunting and still had great groups. Perhaps also of interest is my gun did not seem to "like" partitions, x-bullets, even ballistic tips but it will shoot 3" groups at 300 yds with those a-frames.

445 SM: I'm at work now, so I don't have access to the guide, but I do remember a couple of loads from memory for the 300 and 7mm Weatherby. For the 300 and 180gr loads, the factory equivalent load is 80.1gr of MRP and for the 7 and 139gr bullets is 74.1gr of MRP. See if those two match up to your book. If they do, you have the real thing! If you like, I can post the 270 stuff when i get home today. jorge
