Can anyone give me an educated guess on what the 338 winchester short magnum velocities,ENERGY, and bullet weight will be?
Do you think it will perform like the 338 winchester magnum or even close?THANK YOU

I suspect that it'll be about 100 fps. slower across the board than the .338 Win. Mag. That's certainly the case with the .300 WSM versus the .300 Win. Mag.......

What Allen has said.

Although if all else is equal then the 338 WSM will be closer to the 338 Winchester than the 300WSM is to the 300 Winchester because the 300 Winchester is a bit bigger case capacity than the 338 Winchester.

If speed is your need in the 338 bore then there is always the 338/378 Wby

Trashcanman,

I have a 338 WSM chambered in a 15" XP-100 handgun.

I use it for deer and elk with the following loads.

180 gr Ballsitic Silver tip with Rl-15 and CCI-250
2850 fps

200 gr Ballsitic Tip with Rl-15 and CCI-250
2725 fps.

I agree that you will get roughly 100 fps less then the Win Mag using the WSM case.

Good Shooting!!!

It all depends on how it's chambered.

I'm into my fourth one right now with chambering comparable to the 300 WSM in throat length. The one just before, had free bore. The earlier one equalled 338 Win Mag velocity. This one does about 75 fps less, or maybe a bit better. Just today, Nosler 210's chronographed at 2900 fps, , 225 Nosler Accubonds were in the high 2800's and Barnes TSX's were just over 3000 fps. This rifle has a three groove Pac-Nor, 22". The best groups have been with 210's in the 7's.

The others have been 21" tubes and the velocity has been comparable. If you're looking for 338 Win Mag performance, build a 338 Win Mag. If you want something close, but not quite, the Wizzum will do it if you stay with 225's or shorter. The 250's intrude greatly into the powder chamber and you won't do much better than 2600 fps.

I85's in the TSX. I've never had luck with Barnes in anything I've tried and I'm having a tough time with these. I'd like to make them shoot but haven't been able to. Just started load development with them using only what's also a new powder to me, Ramshot Hunter, so it's too early to tell much. Best group so far has been 1.24". Worst near 8"!!! I haven't got 100 rounds through this barrel yet. I think I'm pushing them too fast as I've been over 3200fps with no pressure signs and the faster they go the bigger the groups.
