I've been playing with different bullets in my 416 Rem in preparation for a trip to Africa and have been impressed with the new Barnes 350 TSX. The accuracy is very good and the penitration, while not up to elephant standards, should be plenty for any bear. They tend to hold on to their petals harder than the original X bullets thus limiting penitration but the resulting shock should be sufficient for bear. The BC of the bullet is ~.500 so if you get 2500 fps you can duplicate '06 ballistics with the 180 grain bullets, any faster and it gets flatter. Give it a try and see if your gun likes them, I'm using REL 15 with good results. Oh yeah, I'm getting very little copper fouling, something that concerned me with Barnes bullets.

I hunted brown bear with the same gun/caliber combo in '98. I used 400 gr. Swift A-Frames at 2400 fps and it absolutely pole axed a 9'4" brownie. The bullet was recovered under the off side skin and it looked like a picture from a bullet ad.

Barnes X, Swift or Partition... probably in that order depending on how they shoot in your rifle.

I took a CRF m70 .416 Rem. to Africa last year with Barnes bullets and was happy with them.

Maybe this is obvious but I would stay away from the Hornadys. Thank goodness I've only tried them on our CA pigs... but my experiences haven't been good with penetration or performance.

Have a great hunt,
Kyler
