I was just wondering if anyone was using the H380 powder in their 22-250 and what kind of luck you had with it. I am going to be shooting 52 grain A-Max bullets.

It's an excellent powder for the 22-250. Actually its name was derived from the fact that Bruce Hodgdon found that 38.0 grains of it was one the best loads for the 22-250.

H380 works well. In my 22-250 at least, it is the second best I've found. My rifle prefers Winchester 760 which is very similar but not exactly the same.

Just happen to have my log book sitting here with me tonight.

In the spring of '05 I ran some H380 under 52 amaxes. The velocity average was ~3760 fps @ 12' using 40 grns of H380 in Win cases with WLR primers from my 26" tube and accuracy was in the .3s @100. Not the best spreads or accuracy from this rifle, but not bad at all. You should probably start around 38 and work up.

The same day I ran some H380 under 55 BKs. 39grns gave avg 3530 fps @12' and 100yd acc of .5". Again not the best spread and so-so accuracy for this rifle.

My current 22-250 seems to prefer AA2015 and H4350 with the 52-55s. These rifles work so well with such a wide range of powders.

H4895 and Varget are quite good in several of the 22-250s I've loaded for.

Good Luck

38 grains of H380 has been my standard for years (30+, no I'm not old I started reloading at a young age) for 50 grain bullets or up to 53 grain bullets.
I've recently taken an interest in Reloader 15 as well and it shows some real promise.

380 works well in a Tikka 595 I load for. 37.6gr. up to 38.4 is all I have tried with the 55 gr V-Max. Haven't tried anything else yet; this combo is just too good in that rifle. I know others who like IMR-4064 and RL-15 and W-760 aka H414. Merg

H380 is good. I prefer Varget or IMR4064. Don't have to use magnum primers like you do with H380 and the others burn cleaner, IMO.

H-380 has proven to be the best powder in my '250 but only using magnum primers though.

I've never had very satisfactory results with H-380, but remember, "your mileage will vary".

I'm always amazed at the number of shooters who have independently come up with 35 or 35.5 grains of (either variety) of 4895 behind a 55 grain bullet as their "go to" load in a .22-250. It has worked well in all I own.

the problem with h380 is its very temp sensitive if you work up a max load at 40 degrees then keep the shells in your warm truck so they heat up to 75 or so you are gonna have a pressure issue, it is however the most accurate powder for me using the 50grn bullets that I like, I have switched out to RL 15 and am very happy with it, it lets me run about 75 fps more speed without the pressure issues and nearly the same accuracy

in times when one needs a rifle, he tends to need it very badly.....PHC

When I first got my 22-250 I also tried the H380 and experimented with different charges in the 55 and 50 grain Nosler BT as well as the Sierra HPBT 53's. I never found a combination that really clicked for me and have been more than satisfied with Varget and find it a lot less temperature sensitive. I hunt in the 100's in the summer and in the 20's in the winter and wanted something that would stay constant in those extremes.

AA-2460 & IMR-4320 are also good choices.
The new IMR-4007SSC is supposed to be a very good 22-250 powder.

Tap_21, Speer manual advises use of mag. primers with ball powders. I use Rem. 91/2 M Primer mainly cause I got a bunch for near nothing. I don't think other manuals call for use of mag. primers like Speer does. Merg

My rifle seems to prefer IMR 4320, but H 380 works best in my 22-250 Xp100 Rem. I am using Hornady and Sierra 55 gr. heads.

I use more H414 then H380 and W-W's 748&760, but IMR's 4320&4895 work much better in my rifle. I even load some IMR 4350, but it's a pain to stuff down that 22 calibre case neck.

The three best powders for accuracy in my 22-250 were H380 - IMR4895 - IMR4064. The 4064 delivered the very best accuracy at 36.5gr. with 50 gr bullets. Work your way up to it....its a bit over max.

Magnum primers usually work better with ball powders like 380. I used them when playing with 380 in mine and they shot better than non magnum primers.
