Powder for 7mm Rem mag - Newbie question

Wondering what powder you'd suggest for my 7mm rem mag. I can not get RL22 which I intended to use, so was thinking about using 7828 instead. Is this a good choice? Others I have found are the H4350 or H4831.

Also read some manual suggest to use Winchester LR primers vs mag primers to reduce pressure but have Winchester Mag primers already. Should I switch the primer or stay the course?

BTW, I am thinking about using the 150 Nosler Parts. Will be used for elk and deer hunting. Last fall I used 160 AB's behind and they worked fine on the game but groups I feel can be improved and appears my rifle likes 150 version the best thus far.

Thanks, basically just getting back into crunching loads so any thoughts are appreciated.

Can't say I have tried 7828 in a 7mmag but use it all the time in my 7STW. Loadtech shows the same velocity with both the 7928 and Rl22 with the 150gr. 62-68.6 grains for 7828

As usual just my $.02

It's a shame R22 is not available in your area, it is about the best 7RM powder I've come across.

7828 oughta be a great choice. I believe it to be similar to R22.

Mag primers are the way to go in the 7RM. I've had great luck w/ the Fed 215s.

H4831 is a pretty fine powder as well, I couldn't get the accuracy I wanted w/ 4831 under the 160 grainers but, it worked great w/ 140s.

Good Luck!

I get very good accuracy with H-4831SC and either 150gr or 160 gr Nosler Partitions. Three shots into 3/4" at 100 yards.

7828 is a great powder in the 7mag. A bit slow for the 150gr, but accuracy is good, I like it for 160-175gr bullets. H4831sc should work well under the 150grs. I think H4350 is too fast for optimum vel.

H4831 and RL22 seem to work in pretty much everything. I haven't used 7828 for this reason, but surely it is good as well.

Thanks for the replies. I have a keg of the 4831 so since I am starting with the 150 gr Nosler Parts I'll try this first. My buddy uses the 7828 for his 300 so can always try some if the 4831 doesn't pan out. I made a opps on the primers I have the Federal Match Gold Mag Primers, so first run I'll give them a run.

Thinking about 64 - 65 grains of the 4831 to start. Sound ok!

Thanks again.

Those are mighty fine primers, I usually get much better accuracy w/ the GMMs. I believe it's because their hotter but, they just plain work better in alot of the loads I've tried them in. I've seen groups go from 1-1.5" down to .5" just over a primer switch.

Good Luck!

I have loaded about every bullet size and type for 7mm magnum. You can not go wrong with H-4831.

My Remington 700BDL in 7mm Rem. Mag. does quite well with IMR4831 and the Speer 160gr. PSP. 64.0grs. will often go into .6" (5 at 100yds). This produces a MV of 2950fps. in my 24" barrel. My most accurate load has been with IMR4831 63.0grs. which has grouped at .405", with the Sierra 168gr. HPBT Match bullet, but that's not a hunting bullet. Best wishes.

I've had good luck, and good (<1") groups, with 62 gr IMR 4831 and 160 gr bullets.

My Buddy uses 61 gr AA 3100, Fed 215 primers, and 175 gr Sierra SPBT OR 175 Nosler Partitions to ~1" at 100 yd.

Too bad about the RL22.

The next best I've used is IMR 4831 for 154/160gr. bullets. I've had success with IMR 4350 using 140 gr. and IMR 7828 for the 175gr. I was getting over 3250 fps with 160 gr. Barnes XLC's using RL22 with no signes of excessive pressure yet. She was cutting through moose like a hot knife through butter. Decent groups too, not that its much of a concern for a moose load.

Thanks guys for the replies, it is much appreciated!

I just have to decide what loads I'll be trying now. According to a few manuals I have peered through it appears around 65gr of the 4831 is considered max, so was think of trying 1-3 grains below to see how it fares with 150gr NP. Thinking of load 15 of each - 62, 63 and 64 grains to see how they shoot. What do you all do or suggest for developing load, a few variations or stick to one then improve if required?

I've had very good results with IMR 7828, like it better than RL22. Something about the recoil feels different between the two ( or am I imagining that ). I use 140-grain Noslers of both persuasions for just about everything, partitions for big stuff and BTs when making a mess is not an issue.

When I picked up my Ruger 7 Mag it had been "ridden hard and put away wet" to use an old cliche. The previous owner said it would only shoot well with Federal Premium ammo with 160 gr Partitions. He was right. As long as that barrel remained on the rifle, I found no other bullet that would match its sub-1" groups for three shots at 100 yds, either factory Federals or handloads. I found a new takeoff barrel for $45 and paid my local smith to install it. I naturally had some of the Partition loads laying around and tried them--3" groups. The final load I worked up is 150 gr ballistic tips, IMR 4831, Fed 215 primers in Federal brass at a chronographed 3008 fps. Shoots under an inch all day long. The switch from H4831SC to IMR4831 cut group sizes in half.
