Re: Chronograph shoot out --Oehler Needed

Just a suggestion: instead of firing ten through each, why not align all three (or four) in a single straight line, and shoot the same bullet through the lineup. They need to be straight anyway, and the velocity loss over the first 10-20 feet is minimal anyway. That saves you a whole lot of shooting, and a whole lot of statistical uncertainty.

By the way, your test would and could be statistically significant. you have enough samples, etc. Depending on how you set up your tests, a simple students t-test or the simpler nonparametric test could be used or even analysis of covariance if you were really set on exactitude.

My experience with the F1 Chrony is that the early morning sunrise and late day sundown readings are too high due to solar incidence, dont know if these same shortcomings apply to other makes.

Looking forward to your results.

The only time I have seen this done, the comparison was between an Oehler and a Beta model Chrony. They gave readings within ten to fifteen FPS of one another measuring velocities of over 3000 FPS from a 7mm Rem. Mag.

The "guts" or processors on any of the chronographs will be essentially the same, and, save some grave malfunction, will give identical readings for identical inputs. It is the INPUTS that differ with chronographs, ie. how, when, and how consistently the sensor screens read the bullet. The Oehler has a reputation for better sensors, which may or may not be the case. But if you hook each chrono up to the same screens, you'll get the same readings (within a tiny variation).

Also, the accuracy of the screen spacing has more to do with the perceived variation between two machines than nearly anything else. A quarter-inch variation on a 1-foot spacing gives more than a two percent error, whereas the same quarter inch variation on a four foot screen spacing gives just about a .5% error. If the screens are not parallel with one another (that is, they might be tilted slightly inward or outward as can happen with the folding-type machines) then the placement of the shot higher or lower in the field results in an effective variation of the screen spacing.

Bottom line: Screen spacing and alignment is typically more important than the accuracy of processor.

Please post the results. I hope you line up the cronys so the same bullet goes over all at the same time.

I put my Chrony right behind another chronograph, don't remember which one right now, at the range and shot across both of them at the same time. Most measurements were exactly the same, but some varied by 1fps.

"but some varied by 1fps"

Well, there you have it. The chrony is clearly less of an instrument.

BY the Way. I was thinking my chrony was reading way high the other day. about 200 fps in the early sunrise morning light. then I went to reload, and some of the newly loaded primers fell out. Maybe the heat was affecting the velocity more than the sunlight!!

If you do go to all the trouble to run this test, please try and include some sunrise/sunset conditions as well as high noon clear sky conditions. It will make for a better all around comparison.

What is the latest on this testing? I stand ready to mail my chrony if you would include it in your lineup. I even trust you all not to shoot it!!

Four years ago we lined up 4 chonographs in line. Oehler, CE proChrono, pact, and a chrony. Fired shotgun, pistol and rifle over all of them. Then reorderd the line of chronographs and repeated until all were in each relative position in line.

No difference outside SD of ammo used.

Only significant difference was that the CE unit was much more forgiving as to shot placement.

This was done by several of us at my gun club to end argument regarding "best" chronograph. Was told six month later that Brownells had done similar test with same results.

I have, in hand and will have
1: oehler 35
2: oehler 33
3: Pact Pro
4: chrony ? master

I want to thank everyone for helping with this,

I expect to be able to shoot the weekend of the 26th...

I have tested 2 chrony's next to a pact, and saw no real difference, but everyone has good things to say about oehler. So we'll try
