I'm looking for a "C" style press that will handle larger cases such as the .300 RUM. Are any currently manufactured, or do I start looking for an old Herter's press?

Which model Herter press would I need?

Would shell holders for .300 RUM be easily found?

Could Herter's be modified to use a with RCBS shell holders?

Thanks in advance for your help,
Herb D

Herb,

I'd go with a good "O" frame like a Rockchucker if I were ya'll. The "C's" tend to spring somewhat with large cases and the Rockchucker will last your lifetime. Mine's about 30 years old and is still as solid as the day my brother and I bought it.

I'm not certain about the shell holders, but I am pretty certain that you can get what you need at

http://www.huntingtons.com

These are good folk with a ton of stuff. I'm a .308 and 30.06 man, what the heck is a .300 RUM anyway? I hate to look ignorant, but I rarely buy magazines and don't recall seeing it in the American Rifleman. I've only seen it mentioned in this forum.

Eric,

RUM is Remington Ultra Magnum. I think they are based on .404 Jeffrey cases, but I could be wrong on that.

Herb,

Not sure if it qualifies as a "C" press, but Redding's Ultramag would be able to handle long cases, at least probably anything short of .50 BMG. It's a big beefy cast iron unit but the unique aspect is that the toggles connect at the head of the press rather than the base like most other "C's". Consequently, access isn't as open but I'm sure it would be simple enough to insert and extract cases.

The Redding ultra mag. I have one and it works great for my .416 Rigby, and all my other cartridges. It was a very large frame opening; big enough for any cartridge except 50 BMG... Check it out,
www.redding-reloading.com . Sinclair has it on sale for about $180 if I remember correctly from the mailer I received the other day.

Your not going to find a stronger press than the old Herters ones. They are not made of aluminum as are the newer presses today these baby's were made of cast iron. I have both a "C" press and a turret model that must weigh 30lbs easy. Both have the same jaw capacity but I'm not where I can measure it right now. They will handle my 7mm STW with room to spare. But my 50x3-1/4 Sharps I have to back out the seater die a few threads to get the bullet on top of the case then screw it back down.

There are adapters for the RCBS style of shell holders but they would eat up valuable ram space. Vega Tool can supply Herters shell holders as well as adapters.

Herb D.
None of my Herter or RCBS presses have much window. I have several Herter presses and several RCBS. (A, A2, 2A, A3 as well as the Rockchucker and RS.)
The new RCBS Ammomaster ($206>00), The Redding and the Old Western Scrounger Rock Crusher have taller windows, and are good pieces of equipment, though dear. The Rock Crusher will flatten your wallet most,($795.00) but will not likely soon prove inadequate if you decide to get a big gun.(20mm Hispano, 23mm Soviet)
Cheers from Darkest California,
Ross
