What makes this embarrassing is that I used to do it with lead bullets in my .44 Magnum.....but that was a very long time ago. Now I'm using hard cast lead bullets is a .38 special.....(much kinder to the hands) The question is....how is this done....what equipment do I need? /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." There are two types; crimp on and not. You need a sizing die for the crimped ones, like a Lyman 450 resizer. Or even a Lee drive through. For the press on type, just seat them with a tap on a board if you are not sizing your bullets after casting. But, for a 38 special you don't need them anyway.

Yup....I'm in tune with this.....somehow I just want to attach a gas check because I remember when I leaded by barrel on my .44 Mag so bad I couldn'r see any rifling.....and I do want to load them to 1,200 or so.....the gun actually is a .357 and I'm not concerned with a little more than +P pressures....but still taking a far rear seat to the .357 Magnum.....full magnum loads are a real wake up to the hands..... /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Of course the boolits you want to attache gas checks to are designed to take them? The boolit has to have a rebated bottom driving band that receives the gas check. Sort of a heel. There are a couple of GC makers that make GC's from beer cans and other aluminum sheet stock, that CAN be put on plain based boolits. The plain based boolits are sized first, then the check is placed in the sizer die and swaged onto the base. This displaces some lead to make room for the checks. No need for them anyway! Not in 38 special, regardless whether they're fired in a .357 mag. Proper fit and lubrication would be enough. 1200 fps is easily done with a boolit that fits and has the right lube on it. Those 44's that leaded were probably not fitting the cylinder throats or the barrel. They MAY have had some cheap wax based lube on them too. Don't condemn all cast lead boolits because some didn't work at one time. if you run, you just die tired It's not that life is so short, it's that death is sooo long! What he says +1. The special extra bit for a Lyman is often seen on eBay and I don't see why you cant make your own. It being basically a tube sliced open on one side. Think Mauser cocking piece shroud style. Some lubrisizing presses have them as a "swing over" bit permanently on the device. Redding?

I use a gas check seating die available from NOE moulds. Give me a jingle if you need some help.
