Light bullet for plinking in 9.3x64

vashperLight bullet for plinking in 9.3x64
How will be the charge for training shooting of this caliber, using cheap light bullets, 90-100 gr? It is supposed to use bullets for Makarov, normal, and cast.

SR4759Powder charge?
Probably about 8 grains of Alliant Red Dot or an equivalent flake powder.
This load is recommended in many infantry cartridges. The 9.3X64 might need an extra grain or two.
You can look for loads on Cast Bullet web sites and in the Lyman Cast Bullet Manual

Dulltool17But I thought that 9mm Makarov bullets were .358 inch and the 9.3 are .366 inch? Will they still work?
If they do, I might try this in my 9.3 x 62 .... after I get my stock

vashperMakarov has 9.3 mm - the only of 9 mm pistols. The rest of this group have the caliber of about 9.0 mm. And the diameter of the base of Mak brass is equal to the diameter of the Para - that's such a great miracle of Manitou.
Naturally, this light charge can be applied to 62 and 74.
But again, there are two cases : for FMJ Mak bullets and for cast ones - it is obvious that there are various options. Do I need a filler? Brass is very large.

ELeetonVashper,
In part it will be determined by how much of a reduced load you want. Are you wanting to shoot the 100 gr bullets at 300m/s or 700 m/s? While the .30-06 has a smaller case capacity it could provide a good starting point as there are several references which include loads for 100 gr jacketed and cast bullets.
Here is some data for the .30-06 from MODERN RELOADING - 2nd Edition - Richard Lee
100 gr jacketed bullet
Vihtavouri N-540 55.4 gr 3076 fps
63.0 gr 3142 fps
From LYMAN 49th Ed
110 gr cast bullet
Unique 14.0 gr 1677 fps
19.0 gr 2331 fps

SamSierra is .363, I read that Hornady is .365. Rainier used to make a .363 (I'd have to check the bag.) but it looks like they have discontinued it.
A bad day at the range is better than a good day at work.

ELeetonI've seen Hornady at 0.365 and Speer at 0.364

vashperThere are self-made adapter for shooting this caliber normal Makarov cartridge. So, seems like a regular pistol charge will suffice. But the question remains filler.
06 November 2014, 20:35
dpcdDo not use filler in bottleneck cases; too much room for error. Use 5744 powder; it does not need a filler for light loads.

ELeetonVashper,
Does the adapter insert inside the rifle chamber and then allow you to insert a complete, loaded, Makarov pistol cartridge into the chamber?

vashperHere are some schemes of adapters of various calibers:

ELeetonThat clarifies the matter. For such an adapter I would use a regular load for the particular pistol cartridge being used. There shouldn't be a need to use filler.

vashperIt's difficult to find a good turner for this:
so better to use regular load in caliber brass

ELeetonI've seen similar adapters to shoot .308 in .30-06 and pistol cartridges such as you've shown. I haven't really seen them in use. I expect it is due to the cost to purchase the device and then the hassle involved with having to load and unload the device, one at a time. When it is all said and done it is easier to use factory ammunition or to reload your own.
