Will/can anybody run these numbers through Q/L? I've some old 156 Norma ammo that I'm curious about. The 156Norma box claims 2645fps. I'd presume that's from a 291/2" M-96 barrel. I've been told that Norma and other Euros may load ammo to about 50KCUP instead of the military standard of 46KCUP. And plenty of people have said that the 156Norma and the 140Norma@2850fps is way to high for vels. I do know that Q/L is a system that generates in psi and not in cup.
Anyhow, in three shots(156Norma) through my Oehler, I got 2637, 2652, and 2670fps in a M-96. With two more shots of the 156Norma ammo in a 22" Swede 96 sporter, I got 2556 and 2556fps. All five fired cases look fine and will interchange freely between the two actions. Fired cases average weight comes in at 185.3grns and have average water capacity of 58.7grns=3.807(3.81)grams/cc. Of course my math and my(real)old ammo could be fuzzy.
Per Norma's cite today, new production 156 ammo generated 2559fps from a 24"tube and their 140 ammo now comes down the(I think)24" tube at 2690fps.
So what kinda pressures is/was Norma running in the older boxed stuff and is their newest listed ammo runnning at similar or different pressures? What do you think? TIA

Norma changed their pressure testing about 2003 then norma probably used mrp(or noncanister similar) powder for 160g rounds. Now norma has lowerd their recomended max load for that powder. In their loadbook they have americanised/lawyer their loads.

You might contact Norma and give them the numbers off the box. They should/might give you the pressure ratings.

You might also test some new ammo and compare the two sets of data.

Barring having a pressure testing setup and run the same ammo over again to get a comparison, there isn't a good way to answer your question.

Besides QL needs the specific powder that is used in the cartridges and the amount, the cartridge OAL etc...

Luck

Snipe and others, Thanks. I guess if Q/L has the data, please run these Norma powders: N203, MRP, MRP-2, or URP. Or with these bullets: 140NoslerPartition, 160Hornady, 156NormaAlaska, Oryx, and Vulkan. I do wonder what Q/L pressure predictions are for any 140 at 2850fps and 156 at 2645fps using these current canister powders. Norma also has listed a 217 powder.
I do realize that my batch of old factory or any other new factory ammo was/will be a non canister lot production. I believe the old data for production ammo and reloading ammo was generated off the 96 actions with the 29-291/2" barrel length(as far as determining max vel). I'd like to refind where I think I have seen that their current data was now generated from 24" tubes.
Anyhow, currently, the Norma-Products-pages has 7 Swede factory rounds listed. 3 are the 156Alaska, 156Oryx, and 156Vulkan. Magically, they all travel at 2559fps(Ionlythoughtthat2ofmyshotswere-magic). The only factory 140 round listed is the Nos Part @ 2690fps. While I'm not currently interesred, Norma's other 3 loads are two 120grainer's and one 100grainer. Norma canister grade powders are used in their Reloading Data pages and they show all 4 bullets(a 140and three 156s) plus a fifth that may be of interest. #5 being the 160 Hornady.

156 at 2645fps

That doesnt seem to far out of bounds in a modern action.

My load for the 160 gr Sierra (RIP), was 47gr IMR 7828 @ 2570fps or so. Hodgeden manual calls for 47.5 IIRC @ 2600fps as max load in the swede mauser actions.

I am using 2600fps as the target velocity when I start loading the 156gr Oryx.
