I don't recall seeing a post were anyone says they like Winchester 760 ball powder in their .270 loads.

I tried some loads using it in my BAR and had great accuracy but pressure signs (flattened primers). It seems that my Hodgdon Data Manuals No. 25 and No. 26 both show 52 grains of 760 as Max with a 140gr. bullet; 2920fps and 51,100 CUP.

I was using a Sierra 140gr. HPBT GameKing and my 50gr. load shot at 2985fps avg. and gave a nice 7/8" five-shot group, but the primers looked a little flat. The 51gr. and 52gr. loads' primers were flatter. :-(

Now, I notice that Hodgdon's on-line data lists 48.9gr. of 760 as max, at 2788fps and 49,880 CUP. That's more than three gains less than the previously published max load. (They list an IMR 4350 load at 51,000 CUP.)

I've noticed a lot of variation in what is considered "max" for this cartridge, and many posts here contain pet loads that are a good bit over max recommendations in the latest on-line data.

Anyone using 760 in their .270? (I just love the way it meters)

Am I beating up my BAR with a 50gr. load? (It's a hunting rifle that may get fired a half-dozen times a year at most.)

Good shooting,
desmobob

I use 760 a fair bit, and also have good performance in my BAR 270. I am shooting 50 grains myself, and primers aren't overly flat, maybe a tiny bit, but no other pressure signs. I have good velocity with 760, but typically have a little better results with other powders in terms of consistent tight groups, but it does do the trick in my BAR too.

I would shoot the load that gave me good grouping in my BAR and go on with it if I were you.

Good Luck--Don

Thanks, Don.

I shouldn't have said pressure "signs"; just one sign: slightly flattened primers. I'll try this same bullet over some IMR 4831 and see how things work out.

My BAR shot so well with the factory ammo the previous owner gave me when I bought it, I never bothered to buy reloading dies for it until last month. It loves the old Federal Premium load with 150gr. Partitions. It seems to shoot very well with 130gr., 140gr. and 150gr. bullet loads I made up, too.

I sure love the way this rifle performs.

What's your favorite BAR .270 load, Don?

Good shooting,
Bob

Bob, I should have been a little more clear about the other loads being more consistent, that is in other (bolt) rifles.

For my BAR in .270 it liked the factory Win ammo so much that I took apart a couple loads and came to the conclusion that it was Win 760 in them. My BAR shoots the 150 CT NBT over 50 grains of 760 with CCI LR or WLR primers really well. With the 130 gr coated CT ballistic tips I go with 54 grains. They both shoot sub MOA. I'm actually using the plated Win brass on these loads, as that's what the factory stuff came in, and it functions great in my BAR.

I have had great luck with the CT ballistic tip, and I don't have any issues with the coating in my barrel, and I don't have to clean very often with it either. I am north of 100 rounds right now without a cleaning, maybe just a dry patch or boresnake now and then to knock out a little residue, but I am getting excellent accuracy still, which has been typical for this rifle--It's the BAR stainless Stalker with the black coating of whatever Browning variant, I like it a lot.

Regards--Don

What good shooting rifles they are! Before I bought mine, I didn't have any real desire to have one. I was hunting whitetails with my A-Bolt in .308. An older gentleman I knew had the BAR for sale; he said it was too heavy for him to lug around any more and he needed some cash, so I bought it.

Once I got it home and saw how it shot, I was pretty impressed. I even called they guy up and asked him if he was sure he wanted to sell a rifle that shot this well. After getting a good buck with it due to the fast second (third and fourth) shot capability, I decided it would become my #1 rifle for deer hunting. I have since decided the .270 has got to be the best deer caliber going. (I had a couple of bad experiences with the .308, but they can be blamed on the early Nosler Ballistic Tip bullets. I know it was a bullet problem, but it made me lose confidence in my .308.)

I loaded up some more of the 760 loads and tried using the Lee Factory Crimp die this time. I feel a little better about using crimped bullets in an autoloader. Lots of guys claim increased accuracy with the FCD, too. I'll be interested to see how it works for me.

Good hunting,
Bob
