Roll EyesWed. at the range I was presented with about 10 pounds of assorted powder. The powder belonged to an old reloader who passed away, that I didn't even know. There was about 3/4# of H 4831 SC. I have zero experience with the SC version but beaux coup experience with the std. H 4831 and IMR 4831.

If any of you have comparative information between the SC variant and one or both of the other two and will share with me Big Grin it would be appreciated.Thank you beerroger

bartsche,

I use both the long cut, and the short cut H-4831 in my 7mm Mag. The loads are exactly the same for each with 150 grain Nosler Partitions, 63.5 grains.
I think that the school solution from Hodgdon is to work up just like starting over again when switching from LC to SC. They are correct, but I just swiched using the same powder charge, and it worked. Identical groups too.
The SC works so much better through the measure that I will only buy SC from now on.
What cartridge will you be using it for?

Good find on your part, all that powder.

Isn´t the "SC" version a little bit "quicker"?

I haven`t been able to see a difference between the std H4831 and H4831sc in my loads. Hodgdon claims they fall in place with each other within the allowed variations of different powder lots.
For all purposes they are the same powder.

Don't mean to rain on your parade. Had the same issue a couple of years back. Man at work died and the wife found the young teens playing with the powder and matches. So she gave me everything.

Only issue was that at least two of the powders were not what the label stated. One was super slow thank goodness and not the other way around. The other was supposed to be 414 and it looked like 4831. Completly wrong shape. So since it was free I dumped anything that had been opened. Better say than sorry.

As usual just my $.02

I switched to SC two or three years ago. Same as H.

I think I agree with ramrod. feritlize the lawn with anything opened unless you would bet your fingers, eyes, and the rifle of the day on it. I heard years back guys would blend their own powders. Benchrest guys are infamous for this. One smith told me he would drop a grain of bluedot then throw his charge. He gave up that practice. It was a lesson on what not to do.

I always cringe when I see a guy getting out of reloading and trying to sell off all his half empty 8 lb jugs of powder. It would take a lot of trust (or perhaps stupidity?) to buy those. Even the most careful amongst us make mistakes. I'll make my own mistakes and pay the price, but I don't care to pay dearly for the mistakes of others.

I use H4831 SC all the time...and just substitute
the load data for regular H4831 with the same results & no problems. After all, the powder companies say to do this..why second guess the experts?
Best Regards,
Tom

I use H-4831 SC regularly, same "recipes" as with old style H4831. According to Chris Hodgdon et al, the SC is the same as the old style, backed up by my own experience in .270, .30-06 and .300 H&H, and I love the way it meters smoothly after all the hate and discontent with loggy old 4831.
