1-in-12 for 223 Rem?

I've been looking into .223 heavy barrelled rifles...found some, but the rifling twist makes me doubt. I would like to load for various bullet weights. Some say 1-in-12 will stablize up to 63 grain bullets, but Speer manual says only 1-in-10 or faster will result in practical accuracy for 63 grainers.

Then there's the benchrest crowd : "minimum rifling twist will give you the best accuracy, because it doesn't distort the bullet jacket that much."

What's your opinion for 63 grain bullets going through a 1-in-12 barrel?

.223 Rem Rifling twist rates from some manufacurers :

Remington : 1-in-12
Winchester: 1-in-9
Tikka : 1-in-12
Savage : 1-in-9
Ruger : Can you tell me?

Go to ar15.com and they explain this very well there. I will tell you that if I were going to be shooting heavier bullets I would be looking at the 1/9 or better yet 1/8 twist, but since I shoot fur predators I have a 1/12 to stabalize 40gr. As a rule faster twist for light bullets. My savages in 1/9 shot both ends of the scale 40-60 well, but it varies with each rifle. Hope I helped out a little. Good shooting.

I have a Rem 788 in 223 with a 1/12twist and it shoots 60gr hornady HP'S w/26gr or H335 very accuratly. It also likes the 62gr FMJBT.

My T/C Encore 223 Rem barrel (1 in 12") will not stabilise the 62 FMJBT bullets, but loves 40 gr Nosler BTs.

Had a Bullberry custom 223 barrel made with 1 in 8" twist, shoots 62 FMJBTs OK, but really shines with 69 HPBTs.

I'd recommend that you go with at least 1 in 10" for the heavier bullets.

Going off the top of my head, I thought that the Mini-14 had 1 in 10" twist? Mine seems to shoot 62s OK.

Length,not weight is the determining factor. My 1-12"s will stabilize the 64gr PP's. That twist is my favorite,for what I do with the 223/223AI.

I have barrels twisted 7",9",12" and 14". Your tastes in projectiles might be very different from mine. When in doubt,bump the twist rate to the next quickest level.

The Rem PSS is 1-9" also................

I have a Ruger 77VT with 1 in 12 twist. 60 grain Vmax are the most accurate rounds I've tried, followed closely by 40 Vmax.

When I first got my Cooper VE in .223 I went to the range with some 55 gr. Nosler BT's in several load configurations. Everything was between 1 and 1.25 inches. Not good for a Cooper. When I called them, they told me I had a 1:14 twist, and to go with 50gr pills or lighter. Once I tried the Nosler BT's, it was magic. 27.5 gr of H335 and it will keep five shots under .5 MOA with boring regularity.
