Easy answer is 25-06. Very light recoil, very accurate and it kills like lightning.

For all of that, a .243 Win or .260 Rem in any A-Bolt or Remington M700 (not a Model Seven). Or a .257 Roberts in a custom bolt-action. Forget that BLR..... it won't cut the mustard for varmints or even informal targets. The .25/06, 7mm/08 and .308 are nice, but too much recoil for an all-day varmint shoot. The 6.5x55 is nice, but limited in accurate rifles and still too much on varmints. The .257 is the best compromise but most the most expensive option for an accurate rifle (Ruger fans get real). If deer/informal target is #1, a .260. If varmints/target is #1, then a .243.

.243 Win is best for all around use. 70 Gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips for varmints, Coyotes and Wood Chuck; 100 Gr. Nosler Partition for Deer sized game. Truely a duel purpose rifle!! I love my Win. Model 70.

A Remington .280 in any flavor. Hunting is simple, squeeze it, spank it, hang it !!!!

Hello Yoter Been absent a few days...I've been using the H4831 loads out of the Hodgdon book for the most part. I have not chronographed any rounds but the results at longer ranges seem to indicate velocities in the 3400 fps range with 85 grain bullets, about what the book says. I've been shooting 85-grain Ballistic Tips, Partition Bullets, and Barnes XLC. For brass, I got 11 boxes of unprimed Winchester 284 cases from the same manufacturing lot ( paid too much for them, too ) and did the first squeeze on the necks with a 5/16" collet on a South Bend lathe. Once that is done I lose very few cases with the 6mm-284 dies. Tom

"Cheap to reload, compared to mags..." 30-06 will do everything, and, it's probably the cheapest, due to the great variety of bullets for the caliber, and many deals that occur with over supply, etc. You can load it up to velocities the others are talking about, by using 120-130 grain bullets. And, it's a joy, because it's an inherently accurate round, and only accurate rifles are really fun(Whelan). gs

Without a doubt, the 25/06. It will do it all.

My Sendero in 270Win shoots anything from 90grn Sierra Hollowpoints (MV 3780fps) to 160 grn Partitions Sub MOA. Favorite deer & hog load is 130 grn Hornady SST. Your choice is broad, the 270 is just one of the good ones. badger.

After a great deal of thought your only choice for a target rifle, varmint rifle, and deer rifle, the cartridge using the least amount of powder to get the job done for all three of your wants in one rile you must shoot the 243. You can use the 58 gr. for varmint, 70 grain for target work, and 95 to 105 grain for deer.

Oh, pardon me, didn't mean to be so loud. I think a fairly good choice for a deer, varmint, target combo might be a 270 Win.

I was wanting a gun that would be good for300 yards not too much recoil, good for deer, target and varmit. No bull barrel, a sporter is a must. want it to be cheep to reload compared to the mag's. I was thinking about a browning BLR chambered for 22-250 or 7mm08. Any suggestions on rifle and cartridge? reloader len

As has been stated, many cartridges would fit the bill but the 260 is one of my favorite all around cartridges. It chambers nicely in a short action rifle, has VERY good accuracy potential, and a great bullet selection. I definitely prefer a 6.5 over 7mm any day. You can shoot 95 grain V-Max for varmints, all the way up to the very efficient 140 grainers for big game. This truly is a great cartridge and would serve you well.

I personally would suggest the 7mm-08 - maybe not in a carbine (as the round is often chambered) though my 20" barreled Steyr Compact in that caliber is a real tack driver... Regards, Kevin

.25-06, unless you consider the moose a deer. Alternates would be anything similar in .257 or 6.5.

I see a lot of good numbers on here like the 25-06, 270 and 257 Imp. etc. and they are all great numbers, but here in Idaho on rock chucks, pinheads and prarie dogs a shooter can crank off 500 to a 1000 rounds per day, ever done that with a 270 or 25-06?????..Thats one reason why I suggested the 250 Savage, its the best compromise...given my druthers I'd rather have a 300 H&H and a 223 or something on that order. ------------------

I will place my vote for the 220 Swift with Hornady 60gr.HP. I got a buddy in Alabama that is at 16 deer already this year. When he shoots they fall in their tracks. He shot one at 350 yards and the buck flipped over backward and landed in a bush with his feet sticking up in the air. By the way bullet placement is the most important part in shooting. There are some that believe only a .25 caliber or larger is the minimum for deer, and that is alright with me. Read "Handbook For Shooters & Reloaders" volume 1 by P. O. Ackley under Killing Power on pages 73-83 about his expierence with the 220 Swift. By the way my buddy shoots a Ruger No.1 . I guess the 22-250 with 1-14" twist would be in a Sporter rifle.
