I visited my brother over the long weekend, and he gave me a couple of dozen cast 82 grain bullets to try in my Winchester 53. I have been using 60 grain jacketed bullets and IMR 4198. Can anyone suggest a load for the 82 grainers? I would like to keep velocity on the low side. Thanks.
Pete

From my old (3rd ed) Lyman manual:

4.2 - 5.5grs Unique 1270 - 1555fps
3.2 - 4.2grs Red Dot 1125 - 1355fps

These loads were listed for the Lyman 257312 (88gr) bullet.

Thanks for the reaponse, but I would prefer loads using IMR 4198 or H4198. Part of my eternal quest to cut down on the number of powders I stock.

I suspect even if you cram the case full of 4198 you're going generate very low pressures and commensurate velocities.

I've had very good accuracy results with 15.5 grains of ww748 under the bulk Remington 86 grain FP at 1250 fps. This could be modified for your cast of course. On the other side, using the 257420 lyman at 72 grains w/gas check and thinned liquid alox over a case filled to the base of the bullet with either 1680 or 2200 (work downward for accuracy) is a great and powerful load at 2000/2200 fps. Br4 primers for me on these loads. Neck anneal for more consistent bullet pull. Us an "m" die too for the same reason. Take a little ticket puncher to make wads if you don't have gas checks, and a partial cut square of Toilet paper to keep powder & wad in order. Good shooting but you have to work at it. Marlin classic 25-20 was the rifle .

If you check out one of the cast bullet manuals you'll find that's what makes Unique "unique". With cast bullets, it can be used in almost every centerfire rifle or handgun cartridge out there, not to mention many, many shotgun loadings.

My old Lyman 45th handbook lists 14 gr. 4198 max with the 257420 bullet at 2000fps. I've been using 13gr. for years in my 100 year old M94 Marlin and get 2068fps out of the 24" barrel. They show up to 13. gr. with the 90 gr. 257312 at 1882fps. I've been using 12 gr with an 80 gr. custom mold with very good results. Great fun cartridge!
