7x64 Norma Case Length; .020 shorter than spec?

I just resized some factory new 7x64 brass from Norma.

They measured on average 2.490". Industry spec for 7x64 is 2.520. I used a proper 7x64 FL die and did set the shoulder back (I checked some that I had not FL sized as well).

Has anyone ever this? Minimum spec is 2.510", so I'm .020 over. I don't have any concerns with this, but seems odd. It will be interesting to see the case length on some factory Norma and S&B 7x64 ammo after I fire it and compare to the fired brass I'm loading.

I think you mean your new Norma cases are actually .020" under in length, not over.
Why did you need to set the shoulders back on the new brass?
Not unusual to find new cases shorter than spec, for example and for some unknown reason, new RWS cases for reloading and the RWS cases used in their factory loaded ammunition for the 404 Jeffery were always short by 1mm at 72mm in length instead of 73mm as per the European cartridge notation of 10.75x73. All other brands of cases I have for the 404 are 73mm in length.

Short cases are not a problem unless crimping a mix of cases where the length must be the same for all cases to ensure the crimping process works properly, or else of course adjust your crimp die to crimp batches of cases sorted by length.

correct, .020 under.

I FL resize all new brass. It should not have set the shoulder base.

Do not confuse nor compare the SAAMI specs to a mandatory "Industry Spec"; there is no such thing.
Set the shoulder back? Again, SAAMI specs vary widely from min brass to a max chamber; you have to make ammo to fit your rifle. Can't expect just run it into the die and all is good; might be, or might not be. Have to custom fit each die/brass/chamber, to work in concert. No guarantee that they will.
Those are voluntary specs.
CIP specs might be mandatory, but not here.
You do not have a problem; adjust your die to fit your chamber, load, shoot, repeat.

What he said. Brass inevitably grows longer with each reloading. Be happy that the new brass is short enough that it will be a while before it needs trimming.

They do that so the brass will fit "any" chamber and it works 99% of the time..but after a couple of firings your right where your supposed to be! tu2
