OK fellas! I am trying to find the ideal hunting round. Right now, I am shooting the Barnes TSX 130 grain bullets. I just ordered another box, as well as a box of Nosler BT 130 grains. Here is what I got so far out of my Tikka 270 WSM T3 Lite Stainless/Synthetic with the 130 grain Barnes TSX bullet:

61 grains of H4831 = 2818 fps
66 grains of H4831 = 3044 fps

58 grains of IMR 4350 = 2898 fps
62 grains of IMR 4350 = 3086 fps

72 grains of MagPro = 3152 fps
74 grains of MagPro = 3236 fps

The H4831 and IMR 4350 have grouped the best. The MagPro gave me good speed, but group size was not what I wanted. Perfectly fine for a hunting round, but I know the gun can do better.

What do you 270 WSM shooters trim your case length too? What do you set the OAL too?

I see the 270 WSM specifies two different OAL based on the bullet. Why is this? Would the Barnes TSX be set at a PSP length versus the BT length?

Lets hear from some of you 270 WSM ahooters!

I have a Hill Country Harvester, which is really just a Rem 700 that they restock, tune, and guarantee to shoot sub-MOA with factory loads, in this case Federal Premiums with 140 gr. Nosler Accubonds. I like that bullet, so I went to work trying to duplicate the load with reloads. The best load I could find was 65.5 gr. Reloaded 22 and Fed 210 primers (large rifle, not magnum, which often seem to work better with WSM cartridges). This load duplicates the Fed Premium in this gun, 3175 fps, std. deviations under 10 fps, groups consistently sub-MOA.
I trim the cases to 2.095". OAL is specific to each gun and bullet. Most of my rifles prefer Accubonds rather close to the lands, usually .010" off. In this gun the OAL that gives the most consistent accuracy is 2.825", which is about .012" off the lands. With Barnes TSX and TTSX it seems to work better to set the bullet deeper, .030 - .050" off the lands.

I shoot four .270 WSM rifles, all Model 70 Winchesters, two from New Haven and two from South Carolina. They vary in speed from 50 to 150 fps per barrel. My powder for the 130 grain bullets is 68 grains of RL-22 with Fed 210 primer. Bullets from fastest to slowlest is North Fork-Nosler Partition-Accubond-Solidbase-Ballistic Tip, Barnes TSX. My rifles like the 140 grain bullets with 68 grains of RL-25 and same primer a little better as to accuracy with the Barnes TSX shining brightest followed Sierra then by Nosler Accubond then Ballistic Tips and uncoated Failsafe. All my rifles will shoot one inch groups with 150 grain Nosler Partitions but not one holers that I prefer. I just recently started started shooting the Nosler Partitions in 160 grains and they all like them and accuracy looks very good with .35 best so far. I use 67.5 grains of Magpro with the same primer. The load is to hot for one of my barrels, the other three prefer it. I got 3202 fps on one shot with the average 3175 fps and the best group. Now listen to this, my 140 and 150 grain speeds are lower or equal but not faster. That is one hell of a Deer or Elk load in my opinion. The reason for all the WSM's is I have a pastle of grandsons and one grandaughter that all want to shoot it and they are my pride and joy, so why not. Once again this .270 WSM is awesome for Deer hunters and nothing to sneeze at for Elk. Good shooting.

I would love to try a few more powders, but it sucks paying $30 for a pound to decide you and your gun do not like it. Now why dont manufacturers sell a 6-8 ounce can for testing purposes?

I completely agree, finding that perfect powder can be expensive. Reloader 22 has been my best all around powder by far, you should really try it. Good shooting.

I also ended up loading RL 22 in my .270 WSM. Worked well.

My hands down favorite load for my 270 WSM uses a 140 grain Nosler Partition over a max load of RL 22 for over 3200 fps.

Living in CA, I had to come up with a "no lead" load so I tried the 130 Barnes TSX and the Nosler 130 E-Tip, both shot pretty well, but just not great.

I tried the 110 grain Tipped TSX over IMR 4350 and worked up to 3600 fps with great groups. Man, that is one heck of an antelope round.

Well then, I guess I will try the RL-22 next. RL-25 was on my "I wanna" list too.

Out of curiousity, what was a "max load" in that powder for your gun?

With the 140 grain Nosler Partition I decided on 66 grains of RL 22 for a maximum in my Winchester Model 70 chambered in 270 WSM.

Has anyone tried Ramshot Hunter in their 270 WSM's?

Heard good things about it for both the 270 and 300 WSM's but have not yet tried it.

Cheers

Thanks for the info! What is the barrel length on your gun? What primers are you using?

My model 70 has a 24 inch barrel.

I have never used anything but Fed 215M primers in my 270 WSM or my 300 WSM rifles. I use Winchester cases.

I've been using H4831 and RL22 behind the 130 gr Hornady Interbond. Very effective on big whitetails.Groups were around an inch at 100 yds. I tried some MagPro and the first 3 shot group was one ragged hole. Also Try playing with your seating depth . Some rifles are a little fussy about that.

I have a T3 Lite Stainless with the synthetic stock. My favorit load is 63,5 Grains Rel.19 behind 140 Accubonds. Primer is RWS 5333. L6= 73mm. Winchester brass, case lenth 53mm.
Other powders gave me to much flame.
V3meters= 940m/s. When I do my part, it keeps 5 shots under 20mm.

I worked this load up from 62 Grains and the results realy improved after pillar bedding the action with Devcon. Make sure to clear the front stock from the barrel.

Hope it helps

In my Ruger M77 MKII I load IMR 4350 with 130 gr Ballistic Tips, 62.5 gr, WW brass and WLRM primers, I get 3200-3250 fps. Which is just under factory velocities.

I'm using MagPro under 140 gr Hornady BTSP Interlock bullets and Fed 215 primers. Accuracy is good so far, but I haven't got the chrony out yet. Velocities should be in the 3150-3200 fps range.

I'm loading my Winchester LH 270WSM to 270Win. velocity, 130 gr Sierra ProHunter and either XMR4350 or H4831 to give 3,000 fps. I use Rem 9 1/2M primers. Good accuracy. Took one black bear so far with it.
