Folks,

I have searched high and low for some factory 8x68S ammunition but have come up empty handed. So until I get set up to reload, I have decided on using a custom ammunition company for a couple of boxes for test firing and zeroing my planned rifle. The one main problem is that the company I've picked does not pressure test. Because of this, I am looking for some safe, proven, and reliable 8x68S loading data for a couple of different bullet weights and types. My list of components is listed below:

- RWS brass
- CCI 250 primers
- 200-gr. Woodleigh Protected Point
- 220-gr. Swift A-Frame
- Norma MRP or Vihta Vuori N165

If anyone can provide some info. using these ingredients I'd be most appreciative.

Thanks in advance.

I gone into my Viht. manual and do not see the use of either powders and the bullets of choice. I took the liberty if you will to glance in my Quickload program and punched in the max. COL of 3.425" and bbl.length 24" using MRP which by the way gives better velocities than the 165.

SWIFT 220 A-Frame

MRP>73.1(max. charge)grns.
63,769psi
2862fps
103.1% case fill

as always start the 8-10% less than max and work up

I have found that QL is rather optimistic and at times pretty accurate as well - be safe.

these are off of steve's reloading pages for 220 grn bullets

IMR-4350 From 58.5 grains to 64.7 grains
Federal 215 Primer
IMR-4831 From 60.2 grains to 67.4 grains
Federal 215 Primer
N-160 From 57.6 grains to 72.2 grains
Federal 215 Primer
RL-19 From 59.4 grains to 67.2 grains
Federal

granted you wont have the ability to "work-up" a load with a custom reloading company but I or H4350 ought to be pretty good.

I would ask them not to exceed 62 grns of of I4350 and you should be fine.

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Pintoguy : I have never used the powders you want to use. But have some experience with IMR 4350 and RL 22 . In an old VihtaVuori Oy brochure ,they load a 200 grains Speer SP with 72.2 grs. of N160 giving 2890 fps and a press. of 55.114 psi. The N-165 have the same Relative Burning Rate than the RL-22 and the IMR-7828 and I have reloaded 200 grs. Speers with 77grs RL-22 giving 2900fps., and 220 grs. Sierras with 65 grs of IMR-4350 , at 2700 fps and 66 grs of Rl-22. This loads were safe and accurate in my rifles . I have had 3 rifles in 8x68 S and the calibre is outstanding , far more powerfull than the 300 s and more efficient than most of them ( less powder for the same speeds with reasonable pressures). Hope this info could help you.

The 220 gr. data listed above from "Steve's Reloading Pages" is in fact from the Hornady 5th Addition Manual. They recommend IMR4350 as the nest powder for this cartridge.

I will have commercial ammo available for that caliber sometime this fall.

Send me a PM of you bullet desire; I can than quote you the cost. I use RWS brass and inline loading techniques.

The ammo you buy this year will shoot just like the ammo you would get from me in five years.

Maximum pressure ........ = 62790 psi
Way of projectile at Pmax = 2.31 in
Muzzle velocity ......Ve = 3089 fps
Muzzle pressure .......Pe = 11143 psi
Project. energy at muzzle = 4239 ft.lbs
Fraction of powder burnt = 99.8 %
Projectile travel time from 10% Pmax to muzzle = 1.18 ms

WARNING: Near Maximum Average Pressure - tolerances can cause dangerous pressures !
Real maximum of pressure inside barrel.
End of combustion after the projectile passes muzzle.

220-grain bullet; Norma MRP from 65.0 to 71.8 grains, V from 2500 FPS to 2800 FPS. (Re 22 loads should fall close to the same range.)

Case: RWS, primer: Federal 215
