The only problems I`ve had with my crony was when the ground was snow covered and the sky was clear. The snow reflected the light and made the crony miss a lot of bullets. The angle of the light from a rising / setting sun also can cause the eyes to miss or miss read a bullet. I started adjusting the tripod to have the crony set at a 90 deg angle to the ground and the defussers pointed away from the sun as much as possible. The machine started acting right and I began useing it this way under all light conditions. It does make it easy to kill the defuser supports though, so you have to keep POA and where the barrel is pointing in mind when setting up your shots.

A few years back I owned both a Oehler 35P and a Chrony. If you're familiar with the Oehler, it uses three sky screens and takes a velocity reading between the first and second screens and between the first and third screen. It verifies that the readings match and are valid. The sky screens can be placed at any spacing you like, most use a 10' piece of conduit, or 5' spacing. It's a really neat setup. The Chrony on the other hand is a simple unit with two sky screens and they are 12" apart. One day at the range I put the Chrony inside the spacing of the Oehler's screens, between the first and second screens, essentially taking 3 readings for every shot. What I found was pretty impressive. The little Chrony was NEVER off by more than 1 fps on any shot. The Oehler cost in the neighborhood of $350, the Chrony costs around $75. Well, I can tell you one thing, I sold the Oehler. It was bulky to transport, expensive and hard to setup. The Chrony, you unfold it put it on a tripod and attach the diffusers, and you're ready to go. It also transports in a case no bigger than a pistol case. So, as to accuracy, they're accurate as all get out, even the cheap ones.

My findings too, so I now use the Chrony because it is easy to transport and set up using a light camera tripod!

hart...

I'm beginning to think there are two different batches of Chrony's out there. I have had two, and they rarely miss a shot. In fact, the first one did a very nice job of firmly catching a 9mm bullet... Occasionally, I'll get an error when a fly flies over one photocell.

One thought: are you routinely using the extender rods? That does make a 25 fps difference (reduction), and may affect triggering. I always shoot without the extenders.

I just do not understand why my Chrony routinely gives me excellent results, and some others just refuse to trigger properly...
