never seen 4000fps with a 50gr bullet in non AI 22/250 even with a 28inch barrel. have you actualy shot this over a cronograph? 3950fps from a 28inch barrel with a vary warm load Benchmark is the most i've seen. i can get 4050fps to 4100fps from my 22/250AI with 50gr BTs with a 27inch pipe is a no brainer and 4200fps can be done but if the air isn't just right i get the dreded gray mist over 4200fps with every bullet i've tried. this is at 3200 feet above sealeavel

WINCHESTER BRASS, NECK SIZE ONLY, AND TURN THE OUTSIDE OF THE NECKS.
40 GRAINS OF H 380, OR H414, BOTH GIVE THE SAME RESULTS IN ACCURACY WITH THE H380 CRANKING IN AT 4050 FPS, AND THE H414 COMING IN AT 3900 FPS.
50 GRAIN SIERRA BLITZKING(IN WHICH THERE IS NOT A FINER BULLET MADE. IN MY OPINION OF COURSE)
CCI BR-2 PRIMERS, FEDERAL 215 MATCH PRIMERS ALSO WORK, BUT NOT AS ACCURATE
IN MY RUGER M77 MARK II VARMIT LS WITH 26 IN BARELL THE GUN WILL SHOOT 10 ROUNDS IN 1/4 INCH AT 1 HUNDRED YRDS, 1/2 AT 200 YRDS.
HOPE THIS HELPS.

been there done that with nowhere near that speed. 40grs of H380 gets me 3800fps 41grs gives me 3850fps from a 26inch Ruger MkII target. all i can say is you've got one FASTTT barrel.
buy the way i have 11 22/250s, 9 rifles 2 hand cannons all are very accurate none are that fast!

Sounds like a silly way to burn a barrel right out in about 500 to a 1000 rounds...I doubt that anything hit would know the difference in 4000 and 3500 FPS...Guess thats why I still like the 222...

LIFE IS SHORT BARRELS ARE CHEEP AND I'M EASLY BORED
i've got a couple 222s as well as 223, 221, 219 zipper, 219 wasp, 22 hornet and bunch of other hot rods, 220 swift, 220AI swift, 223WSSM, 22/243, 22/284. and i'm chambering a new Hart barrel for 22 BR.
of them all the 22/250 gets my nod as most useful

OUTLAW, THE SIERRA 50TH ANNIVERSARY RELOAD MANUAL STATES THAT WITH A 50 GRAIN BULLET AND 39.9 GRAINS H380 VELOCITY ACQUIRED IS 3900 FPS. ALL I CAN SAY IS MAYBE YOUR "BARRELS" ARE SLOWWWW. NOW EVERYONE KNOWS THE RELOAD MANUAL IS A GENERALAZATION ON VELOCITIES, BUT THE CHRONOGRAPH DOES NOT LIE.

Clint, Yeah it did break 4K on my chrony.

Surprised me also.

But verified it 5 times. Chrony does seem to be off.

Some loads give me alot more than the book claims and some fall dramatically short.

Guess it proves what YOUR particular gun is doing.

I have ran Benchmark over 4,000 with a 50 grain Bullet. Brass life was a little on the short side, LOL. However it did not pop the primer. Accuracy was about as consistant as a sling shot.

Minus 40 grain Plastic Tipped Bullets, I run my 22/250 velocities in the 223 range. I am in a small Minority that use IMR 4198 and RL 7 in a 22/250. But they do a good job for me.

Cheeers and good shooting

i don't live in a lab and don't have a test barrel rig to test loads from but i do have and use a Oehler 43 PBL.
at the alt. that i live, 3000 feet above sea leavel, 4000fps from a 50gr bullet is a no go with preasures that stay under 60,000psi in real rifles in the real world i live in.
drop down to a 45grain bullet and i can go to 4200fps with no problem. a 35grain bullet will do 4900fps but only when the air is dry. i've even done 5150fps with a 35grain in 22/250AI but add just a little humidity and it's gray mist time.
"ALL I CAN SAY IS MAYBE YOUR "BARRELS" ARE SLOWWWW. NOW EVERYONE KNOWS THE RELOAD MANUAL IS A GENERALAZATION ON VELOCITIES, BUT THE CHRONOGRAPH DOES NOT LIE."
key words are barrels and chronograph does not lie.
i'm happy are you?
i think we've run this into the ground long and deep enough don't you.

I've done a bit of load work with the 22-250 cartridge and found that H380 - IMR4895 - and Varget all provided decent 1/4" accuracy in my rifle.............but IMR4064 at 36-36.5 grains in match prepped - chamber formed - neck sized winchester brass with winchester large rifle primers, and 50 grain hornady v-max bullets kept under .002 run-out and seated .030 off the lands will shoot in the high ones and provide some pretty decent velocity also. I find it to be a definate OCW load that flat out shoots. We chrono'd 3837fps three shot average, 10' from the muzzle in a 26" barrel with the 36 grain load. Not 4000 fps but that one ragged hole and 3800fps plus works real good for me. Enjoy your 22-250 Doc

woodseye, check your post unless I read it wrong you state 38 to 38.5 on top and 36gr of 4064 on the bottom. 36gr of IMR 4064 is close to max are you sure 38gr is right?

Your so right Boss......the correct numbers are 36-36.5 grains and although it works well in my gun at those levels, you should work up to it in any gun slowly to make sure pressure signs don't show. I corrected my post to read correctly and thank you for noticing my error.

That part I don't understand. Water vapor is lighter than air molecules. Though it's commonly said that the air FEELS heavier when humid, air density goes down as humidity goes up.
