this may be a little off topic, but i want to spread this word and none of the boards really fits it.

i got a catalog today from Widener's and saw an ad for FN-FAL manufactured, 8 mm Mauser ammo. the ad says it is berdan primed, "non-corrosive" ammo selling for $69 per 1000 rds. i spoke to them and they confirmed this. later in the day, i called back to double check before i ordered any and they now told me that is corrosive....not "non-corrosive" as advertised.

be careful

Savvy shooters will assume that ANY 8mm surplus is corrosive, and clean accordingly.

Interesting. Many years ago, a very large qualtity of FN-Belgium FMJ .30-06 ammo came in, packed in 100-rd. boxes. The headstamp was "FN 57" ...this ammo was sold as "non-corrosive." It wasn't. On ordinary days with comfortable temperatures and moderate humidity, that ammo could be shot and treated as if it actually were non-corrosive. But one day that was blistering hot and the air was tropically soupy, I ran 90 or so rounds through my Garand and, as I was later packing to trek back out and go home, I was horrified to see red rust blossoming in my Garand's bore!

Properly, the ammo was "semi-corrosive." I broke out the brushes and old G.I. Bore Cleaner and dealt with the problem quickly --and never again have I trusted an ad that says any foreign mil-surplus ammo is "non-corrosive." Especially if it's from FN.

I posted on another board about this ammo
under Bright and Shiny My Big Ol Butt. I
picked up some wednesday, opened it thursday
and will return it when they open back up
after christmas. At least half is VERY
corroded with big green scale and pits
under that. But they did say they would take
it back, just cost me two trips to Johnson City (about 1.5hrs each way)I should have
known it was too good to be true!!!
