Yes well, My 223 has a 20" barrel, and I thought
within reason a slightly faster powder would be
better than a slightly slower one.
Then I read somewhere that that's all rubbish.
I asked ADI (the makers of 2206 and 2208(Varget)
but after asking for quires they didn't bother
to reply. Anyway after studying the figures
Varget seemed so much better in a 24" barrel
I've just changed to it, and seeing as I'm too
stupid to get a chrono I'm hoping for the best.

Varget is a great powder for the 223 as well as BL(C)-2, H335, W748, and others.....and it's not relevant what the barrel length is.....18" to 26"....all load the same.

Possibly something changes at the pistol lengths....10" etc.....but I doubt it even then.

Horn, the Interarms Mini-Mausers had long throats and a bad reputation for accuracy. There was a sizeable cottage industry in setting the barrel back a thread and rechambering. They shot very well then.

I dunno if Charles Daley fixed that, or even what version you have.

Confused Horn,

Are you just looking for load data or the Mini-Mauser is not delivering expected accuracy?

.223's normally shoot very (very) well (read: great!) with a pretty wide range of bullet and powder combinations. Some of the more noted .223 accuracy loads are made up with H-335, H-322, H-4895, VV N-130, & VV N-133, N200, N201, IMR/H-4198 and I'm probably disappointing folks who've got a whole lot of other favorites such as BL(C)2 or W748, let alone others. I've had great immediate accuracy load success with many of these powders and any good brand-name bullet in the 40-55 grain range. Unless something's radically amiss you ought to get a very respectably accurate .223 load within the initial couple of attempts in additon to tweaking catridge O.A.L. to a specific firearm.

I gotta agree with Left-Over - my experience with two Mini-Mausers, a .223 and a 22-250 is the rifles themselves required alot of fussing and tinkering about to finally get a reasonable level of accuracy, and even then it wasn't anything to write home about.....other rifles in the same calibers delivered accuracy immediately. This is unfortunate since the concept of a light, handy, neat, little bolt action carbine in their offered caliber range ought to be the business.

As a matter-of-fact both Mini's have new owner's and I hope they've got more patience or less accuracy expectations than I did with these rifles......

Cheers,

Gerry

Got heaps of them for the Zastava Mini mauser
They sure do have a long throat, I tried seating
out near the lands for testing, the 55g Hornady
touches with the end of the bullet just at the
start of the neck!
Because of the mag. I now load at 2.260 is it?
and haven't noticed any practical difference.
Most of my loads were with 2206, which you probably don't get there (see AR POWDERS post
here somewhere).
I have just changed to 2208 (Varget) started
with 55g Hornady and 25.8gr and went up to 27.6gr. In MY rifle 27.3gr/08 went 1/2 groups
so there I stay. The worse group was 27gr
which must have got the barrel during its whip,
and was 1 1/4" 5shot inc mixed FLS and Neck size
Nearly anything shoots under an inch with some
load development, except over 55gr projectiles and Nos part. Factory 45gr Win at (supposedly)
3600 fps go Av of 5/8" group.
All with barrel clean dirty hot cold, syn.stock
touching barrel where ever it wants.
A terrific light short handy rifle.
