please be very careful to use the correct primers , and magnum ones at that , as i tried to use small rifle bench rest with h110 and had just about detonation with it , the powder went hiss , then lodged the bullet into the barrel , and the powder came out as a solid chunk ! once i changed the primers it worked very well , as i got an early one , and early cases , and now have both size primer pockets to deal with , but it is great fun to shoot even with my odd loads of 628 grain round nose and a bunch of 4198 , bur go easy and be careful with those primers ! sierra has a hot line to call and they can give you some loads for what powder you might have on hand ! good shooting !

Brent-

How did you get a small rifle primer to stay in a pocket disigned for a large rifle/pistol primer??

I use H4227 (favorite), H110 (light show in every can) Titegroup (light loads) and WCC844 surplus.

Hornady 350 XTP for deer or hogs, Sierra 400 for mule deer.

440 WFNGC for deeper penetration

Berry's 350 for plinking or load workup

Mastercast 330 or Northeast bullets in a 330 for cheap range fodder.

I use LP in older Hornady cases, LR for everything else except H110 which I use a LRM with.

The Hodgdon data is a great start. Accurate Arms has some data using 1680 and 2400, but I haven't tried it.

For something a bit different, you might peruse John Ross' 500 Loading data page.

I worked with some of it as budget and time allow and it is definitely worth a look.

I'm new to reloading. The only info I have on hand is the RCBS book that came with my reloading kit.
It tells me that the older 500 Mag rounds were designed to use LPM primers. The newer brass is supposed to use LRM primers.
The only primers I have set in my 500 are LRM. I've reloaded around 140 empties 4 or 5 times so far. I have used H110 3 times, and 296 twice. My latest reloads are with H l'il gun. Haven't fired those yet.
At any rate the LRM primers fit and work well for me.
