Hello,

Does anyone have any favorite loads for the 7mm-08 that they would be willing to share? How about a favorite powder? Thanks for the information.

I like the 139gr Hornady SP over a good dose of Varget.

These are the loads I've worked up this Spring/Summer for my Rem 700 Mtn LSS in 7mm-08 w/ 22" barrel. Velocities are chronographed. Groups were measured Center to Center @ 100 Yds. These loads are all safe and show no pressure signs in My Rifle, but if you decide to try them just be sure to back off 10% and work up slowley.

---------------------------------
140 Grn Nosler Ballistic Tip
42.75 Grn Varget (Hot)
2,808 FPS
1.25" @ 100 Yds

---------------------------------
150 Grn Nosler Ballistic Tip
40.5 Grn Varget
? FPS (Didn't have chrono then)
1.057" @ 100 Yds

---------------------------------
139 Grn Hdy SP
47.5 Grn H414
2,876 FPS
.793" @ 100 Yds

---------------------------------
140 Grn Sierra Game King
43.5 Grn Varget (Hot)
2,867 FPS
0.527" @ 100Yds

---------------------------------
140 Grn Accubond
42.5 Grn Varget (Hot)
2,798 FPS
0.764" @ 100 Yds

---------------------------------
145 Grn Speer SP (HotCor)
48.0 Grn IMR 4350
2,830 FPS
0.561" @ 100 Yds

---------------------------------
154 Grn Hdy Round Nose
47.5 Grm H414
2,736 FPS
0.586" @ 100 Yds

I just got this gun this past spring and haven't hunted with it yet, so I can't really say which of these loads will turn out to be my "favorite". With the exception of the 140 Nosler BT's, they all shoot MOA or better, so I'll just have to wait and see how they perform on game.

However, this season, I'll primarilly be hunting with the 145Grn Speer SP (HotCor), but I will probably load up some of the 154Grn Hdy Round Nose for woods hunting.

Good Luck & Happy Hunting!

140 Barnes TSX
44.5 gr Varget
CCI 200
Rem Brass
2825 fps in a 20" barrel, Rem 700
My rifle shoots groups under 1/2" with ease and this load is not hot in my rifle. Always back off any load you find in this site for safety and work up. All rifles are a little different.

If you like a heavier bullet I used a Sierra 160HPBT for many years with 43.8 gr H4350EXT.
At 2500fps it is the most accurate at .230.

I am currently using 40.5gr of IMR 4895 with the Nosler 140gr Ballistic Tip in a Rem. 700 VLS with very good results. The velocity is a little slow compared to the Nosler manual, but the groups are very good.

I also load the H4350EXT with the 140TSX and it is a difficult choice. The Varget is a little faster for me and the H4350EXT is a a Compressed load.

I load 39.5grs. Varget with 150NBTs, CCI 200 primer, Rem. brass. Shoots under 1/2moa out to 300yds.
Next load is 39grs. RE15 with 150MK, 9 1/2 primer, Rem. brass.
I've got my best group at 100yds with the latter, the nosler has netted a 1.5" group at 300yds. for 3 shots. 100yd groups were 5 shots. Jay

The post by First Shot is a good source of info, he has worked up some good loads.

I bought the same version of Remington rifle this summer and have had good results as well.

For whatever reason, the Nosler 140 Ballistic Tips shoot best with a max load of Varget in my gun.

Having said that, I am getting very good accuracy in this rifle using H 4350 with the 140 Nosler Accubond, Nosler 140 Partition, and the Sierra 140 Pro Hunter.

I have only shot one game animal with this gun so far. A 200 pound plus wild hog shot at 50 yards with the 140 Accubond. The bullet completely penetrated the hog and he did not go far.

Thanks for all the responses. I had looked at a Hornady manual and they rec. 4831 for the 154 grain bullet, but it appears that Varget is a more popular choice. Anyone used the IMR 4831 in the 7-08? Or maybe I will have to go out and buy some Varget. Thanks.

I would NOT use 4831 in the 708, get the Varget and pick up some RE15, too. 2 of the best powders for bullets weighing around 139-154. Jay

FWIW, I've tried varget with 150MKs and my rifle wouldn't shoot them as well as with RE15, got to get them both, RE15 works great in 308 with 150-175 grain bullets, too.

H4350 with 140's IS THE CAT'S MEOW in 7mm08. If you have never tried it, it will change your life (well not really but it sounds good).

Work up from 47.0 to 49.5 with CCI 200 primers and 140 TSX. Work up to 48.5 or so with Winchester WLR. Slightly compressed loads are safe and very accurate in my rifle.

Varget and RL 15 both are good powders for 120 grain bullets but did not give me good accuracy with the 140's. I have always thought that filling the case up was a good thing for accuracy/consistancy. IMR4895 is very accurate in my gun but only at reduced velosities (2675 fps+-). Hope this helps.

Dwight, that's scootin for a 20" tube. I'd imagine 2,850 is realistic with a 22" barrel.

I use 49 grains of W760 for .5 MOA at 2950 fps with the 139 Hornady SP in a 22.5" barrel.

The 140 TSX does 2900 fps with 47.5 grains of W760 and getting MOA.

The 120 B-tip does 3100 fps with 50 grains of W760 for .5 MOA.

I use 45.5 grains of H380 with the 154 Hornady and get .75MOA at 2700 fps.

Brad,
I could get more out of it since I have not seen any prssure signs yet. It shoots really good where it is so no need to push it. Rem 700 varmint is about 24 yrs old. A friend of mine was shooting a 788 heavy 20" barrel in competition so I had mine cut down and crowned, then glassed and floated. She shoots real nice.

All in a 22" M700:
140 TSX:
49.5 H4350 CCI200 Lapua Brass: 2825 fps
48.0 H4350 WLR Lapua Brass: 2815 fps
48.5 H4350 WLR Lapua Brass: 2868 fps

120 TSX:
45.8 Varget CCI200 Lapua Brass: 3110 fps
(accurate load but POI shifts up to 1"
from day to day. Note: the 140TSX load keeps same POI over several months).

120 Nosler Ballistic Tip:
45.5 Varget CCI200 Lapua Brass: 3040 fps
-very accurate but POI also shifts some.

Dwight: what componets are you using? especially intersted in primer. That loads looks a little warm in a 20" barrel. When I tried to move up to 49.5 H4350 (CCI200 load) with WLR primers I smoked the primer on the second shot (stopped right there). Be careful.

This is my first post on this forum, so bear with me. This summer, I've shot CAST BULLETS thru my Mcmillian/Wiseman 7mm08. I've found using Linotype-water quenched from a Lyman 073; 165 grain Sil bullet and 43.5 grains of Scot Brigidere 4351 shoot about the size of a quarter at 100 yards. Shoot with a new shooter! thumb

I use strictly Remington Brass, CCI 200 BR2, 140 TSX and 48.5 H4350EXT. There is not sign of pressure at all. I like the Varget better in this load.
Using 160 gr Sierra HPBT Gameking I shot a .230 a couple weeks ago using 43.8 gr H4350EXT.
Before my recent experiments with the H powder and Barnes bullets I had shot the 160 HPBT for 20 yrs using 41.5 gr of IMR 4895 which is very warm by the book but no pressure sign at all in this rifle. The guy that did the work on it is amazed. I had considered getting the barrel fluted and my smith said not to let anyone touch it. I will keep shooting this sweetheart just the way she is.

Have either of you hunted with your 140 TSX load yet? Was just wondering how it performs on game, especially whitetail, out of a 7mm-08.

This will be my first year. I read so much good stuff here and elsewhere about the Barnes TSX that I had to switch. I do have a freind in NC that loves the X bullet for deer and he uses a 120 gr in a 257 Weatherby.
I also talked to the guys at Boondocks Gun shop in Alaska because I wanted to try them in my 300SAUM and they said that most of the guys up there were switching to Barnes TSX and they work great.

Previously I used a Sierra 160 HPBT and it worked for 20 yrs but I never liked the fact that they seperate all in the deer. I could get a pass through on a lung shot and still find pieces of bullet inside. I never lost a deer and never had one go over 50yds but I feel like I am upgrading with all the positive information out there on Barnes TSX.

I still shoot the 160 for practice and with it hitting dead center at a 100yds the 140TSX hits 2 inches high and averaging 2831 FPS.

Good Luck

duckster,
I don't shoot IMR4831 in the 7-08, but I do load 50.0gr of it in my 7-08AI. That load prints .5" groups at 2924fps from a 22" barrel with 140gr Partitions and CCI Benchrest primers. Not my most accurate load, but not too bad for hunting.

Barnes 140 gr TSX with 42.5 grains Varget and Federal magnum 215 primers gives me 2850 fps in my Tikka T3 Lite witth 22 7/16" barrel. This load has worked for antelope thru bison.

I love the TSX bullet but hate the price. If Barnes raises prices again I'm switching to a cheaper bullet. I'm convinced that it's more about bullet placement than bullet construction anyhow. That TSX sure does shoot small groups though!

I shot four bucks with the 140 TSX last season. None went further than 50 yards (shot that one a little far back at dusk). Bang flop on my 141 B&C 10pt at 75 yards anchored through the shoulders. Excellent expansion on all four shots.

I've been playing with the 120TSX but will probably hunt with the 140's.

Worked up a 140TSX load for my brother's Kimber84M this past weekend (H4350 WLR primer). 48.3 grains put all three inside an inch, 48.6 grains made the two shots touch (last two pieces of preped brass).

Goats aren't real big, but they are tough knuckles. Any good 140 to 150 gr bullet will get the job done, with good shot placement.

The operative word is shot placemnent. I would practice some with vertical ( or almost ) up and down shoots and getting your elevation dialed in so your not over/under correcting your shoot placement.

Our goats in my country are off of Lake Ponderay, only way in is by boat, and its straight up a cliff, with no access to the top, and that would be a whole day of climbing and packing getting to the top above them. Level is not in the mix, almost straight up and down. Not even a beach at the base of the cliff. And they are always on that mountain, I had never been by that location when fishing and not seen them and they don't seem to range very far. I have glassed them for hours, they are amazing how quick they can zip around that mountain.

Good luck on this one that would be a great hunt, goats are serious hunts, more about rock climbing and not busting your ass really.

Where did you pull a goat tag? Those are pretty coveted tags?

Was messing with some 7-08 a few weeks ago with some pretty good results. Stainless Rem Model 700 with a 24" pipe. Not an extremely accurate rifle however this load posted about a 1" group (C to C) at 100 yards.

Rem brass
Rem 9 1/2 primer
47.5gr Ramshot Big Game
140 Nosler accubond

Chronographed (Oehler 35) 2925 FPS average
