We went back to the range this afternoon, my wife with her 6.5x55 and me with my 300 H&H.

First she tried the 130gr Xs. 44.5grs of imr 4350 averaged 2643fps, with no keyholes. Accuracy was fair, about 1 1/2", with 2 shoots in 3/4" or less and the other opening it up. I think we can work with this. I'll try changing the seating depth next and see how that works.

Then she shot the 140gr Partitions. 45.5grs of reloader 22 averaged 2530fps with no keyholes. Accuracy was pitiful, the best group was about 2".

I tried the 180gr Fail Safes. 63.5grs of imr 4350 averaged 2769fps. Accuracy, again about 2". I'm looking at trying imr 4831 next.

The 300 H&H is not noted as a tack driver and it may take work to find a bullet powder combination your rifle likes best. heavy recoil rifles tend to produce larger groups than light recoil rifles. There are several powder bullet combinations you can try to improve accuracy.

Your wifes rifle needs restocked, the stock on that rifle rifle is not well shaped to hunt. The fore end is far to thin and poorly shaped. The rifle is poorly balanced with so little wood to support the barrel.

I don't know if you saw my response to your previous post regarding the use of 120 grain XLCs. You said you had keyholes with the 140s, which most here attributed to a fast twist rate. Just for grins, you could try the 120s. My 6.5 likes both the 120s and 140s, but seems to perform better on game with the 140s. I have a few 120s left that I'd swap for some of your unused 140s if you're interested in trying them. Email me and we can talk about my loads too.

Sorry, but I am calling this one. I don't know why but here goes.

The 300HH is a classic TARGET rifle, from wimbleton forward. KNOWN for inherit accuracy and ease of finding great shooting combos.

Recoil has ZIP to do with group size, unless the SHOOTER is flinching. That has everything to do with the shooter, and nothing to do with the gun. In fact, it's been my experience that bigbores are far far far easier to shoot well.

as for the stock on the 6.5, it looks like a plastic copy of the winnie featherweightstock, which is a copy/version of an ultimate classic stock. A stock that keeps the weight basicaly balanced infront, a great method for offhand shooting.

but, these are just my opinions
