quote:Preliminary tests w/Retumbo in my Mod. 70 300 Win Mag. were interesting. First loaded 9 rounds using 200 gr. Sierra gamekings and Fed. 210 Match primers in Win. brass. Powder charge for 1st round was 79 gr, increased ea. charge by .5 gr. so that 9th round contained 83 gr. (Hodgdon lists 79 to 84 gr. of Retumbo for 200 gr bullet in 300 Win Mag.) 1st shot was off paper high, so adjusted scope and shot an 8 shot 2" group with remaining shots. 5 shots (#2,4,5,8,&9) formed a .75" horizontal group, w/#7 openening group to 1.1" and 3 & 6 being the 2' fliers. Velocities in my rifle (OAL was 3.350") Shot# Vel. 1.....2762 2.....2797 3.....2797 4.....2811* 5.....2831 6.....2852 7.....2874 8.....2886 9.....2896 for Average of 2834 fps * Further testing proved the 80.5 gr. to be most accurate in my rifle, capable of 1" 100 yd. groups. (This rifle has been a challenge to get to shoot moa. and not sure I am there yet, but getting much closer.) I did notice the concentricity suffered the more the load was compressed.
