Have any of you savy reloaders heard of a flanged .338 bore based on a .45 basic case necked to .338? I seem to remember reading something about a round that Ross Seyfried (sp) had made for a single shot rifle, a G&A .338 #2 or something like that. Any help would be appreciated. I have a Ruger #1 that I would like to rebarrel to a .338 bore, but would like to go w/ a flanged case.

I recall the article, but vaguely. I seem to recall he (Ross) was getting some pretty impressive speeds out of it. Elmer Keith did one on the 9.3 x 74R case a few years back, specifically for a Ruger #1. I probably still have the article around here somewhere. FWIW - Dan

Fredj338: I recall reading the artical also. I'm shure it was in a G&A issue in 1994 or 1995. I could be wrong about this but I think it was based on the either the .450 or .475 Nitro Express #2. There might have been a thred on this site about 1 or 1 1/2 yrs ago on the same cartridge. Saeed might know. The .338 that Dan refered to on the 9.3x74 case (.338x74 as Elmer refered to it) was actually chambered on a Farquarson(sp?) action. I have that right from Elmer himself from personal correspondence. If had the same idea of a .338,.350 or .375 flanged round in the Ruger#1. I think Seyfried was loading in the neighbourhood of 140 to 150 gr of powder in the case. That would let you know if the primer was a dud or not! The article might have mentioned a short case and a long case version(s). Can't remember that well. Oldtimers disease.

I read some article, too. It was based on the 9.3x74R case, and I dont believe you can put > 100 grs in it. The case was necked down and blown out.

Remember the 8x75RS, .323 bullets and x74R cases might be used. This case is a tapered one, I mean very much tapered.

Have fun! Hermann

Carlos, you are right. Elmer's rifle was a Rigby-Farquahrson (sp?). The Ruger was in the Wolfe Wildcats book, the big one. Velocities of 2700 fps with 250 gr bullets. I haven't found the Seyfried articles yet, but yes I believe it was based on one of the big express cartridges. - Dan

Thanks guys, I have the article on the .339x74 keith. It is a 9.3x74 blown out a bit & necked down. From a Ruger #1 w/ 26"bbl, the author was just breaking 2700fps w/ a 250gr NP.
I am interested in a bit more speed, say 2800fps. Maybe just up the bbl. to 28". You would still have an oal less than a 24"bbl. bolt gun. Some may ask why not just get a .340wby or Lapua? The same reason I don't own a .270 or .300winnie, I just like to be different.
