Has anyone had any experience on reloading 180g Rem PSPCL bullets for Elk or Moose size game? Performance, etc.

I have recovered bullets from a huge bull shot at 200 yards with the same bullet, 180gn out of 30-06. They mushroomed picture perfect. The scapula was not struck. \ As much as I like premium bullets, the vast majority of elk hunters that do not reload almost never use premium bullets. It is in these cases that I recommend core-lokts as they are a sight better than the majority of factory loadings.

Core-Lokts are pretty frangible. I've nuked them,in several diameters. I was pushing them beyond their original velocity intent,so it was my "fault". But,there are certainly much better choices available. That even if you must buy your ammo, over the conter. Their penchant ISN'T breaking bone, even at lower velocities. Big critters, have big bones and I prefer to break them. The Core-Lokt is very accurate,I shoot them as a mainstay in many rifles, for practice. But when Hunting,I opt for a more ruggedly constructed projectile.............

I used 180gr PSPCL in a 30-06 at 2700fps in Africa last July. I killed 8 plains game animals. All eight were one shot kills. The bullet exited on four animals and was found under the off-side skin on the other four. The only animals I killed that were over 500 pounds were my kudu and zebra. The kudu was 660lbs and the zebra was about 700lbs. The bullet exited the zebra and it ran 40 yards and died. The corlokt was found under the off-side skin of the kudu it retained 126.7grs(70.39%). Both animals were shot through the ribcage(lungs).

Thanks for information on the core lokts. For the record its not about penny pinching. I seen their bullets on their web site and know a lot of people use them. I already have X bullets, Grand Slams, A frames, Hornady's and a bunch of other standard bullets in my reloading bench. I mainly use Speer Grand Slams or X bullets for just about everything. Just thought I would try something new. It wouldn't be any fun with just one bullet.

I love core-lock they have dropped a # of moose & deer, worked perfectly. The big bonus in my guns is they also very accurate. I think the key is application, if I shot magums maybe your best bet would be premiums but for my hunting rifles, 308, 280 they work perfect.

fetchmax, lotsa folks in these rooms like to lead with their wallets. You know, the yuppie virus: "it cost more so it must be better". Altho I use a lot of partition and GS bullets, a hornady has never let me down when I did my part. Last deer I shot this year, here on the home place, was with a 154gr hornady ROUND NOSED bullet. 150# deer never moved from his tracks.

I am always amazed how a Ballistic Tip in a light bullet wieght can be used on elk and Fail Safes can be used on a scrony whitetail doe. But all hell breaks lose where a Corelokt, Interlock, or Gameking is used for anything. I like Partitions and load 150's in my 06 for deer, 180's in my 300 win for elk, and 125 in my 260 rem for deer. A couple years ago I dumped a nice big 5x6 Roosevelt bull with a evil 180 grain Sierra Gameking. It was a 150 yard shot quartering away in the lungs and out the far shoulder with my 300 win a about 3150 at the mussle. The only real bullet failure I've had were the Ballistic tips on deer. Lead bullets open up on lung shots and with the proper wieght to cartridge will break shoulders of big ol' nasty bulls.

Me? A yuppie? Damn, that's too funny. Here's my take on all of this stuff. The bullet you load is part of a piece of equipment. You could say that the bullet is a piece of equipment in it's own right. On my hunt I spoke of, my equipment failed. Whenever a piece of equipment fails me due to something other than abuse, I replace it with better equipment. Period. It wouldn't matter if it was a bullet, scope, binoculars, pack, boots, whatever, it's gone and a better one takes it's place that hopefully won't do the same thing under the same conditions. It has nothing at all to do with "statis" or impressing anyone or trying to outspend anyone, there's many people here that outgun me in that department. I'm old enough that the only people I try to impress now already know me so there's no chance of that, like my wife or my buddies . I get too damn few days in the field when I am lucky enough to actually draw a tag to screw around with equipment whose claim to fame is it costs less and it has been manufactured using older processes which have been surpassed by newer designs. I use more fuel on one weeks elk hunt than a whole years worth of Partition shooting would cost me for practice time. Lets put it in perspective, the cost of the bullet is the cheapest cost of the hunt. If I hadn't had them fail, who knows, I might still be using them. The fact is they failed. In my mind it makes it a no brainer. Do what you want and shoot what you like.

Just FYI, Talked to a hunter that has hunted the moose camp in Newfoundland that we are hunting this fall. The past 8 years him and his son have shot 16 moose between them. They both use 30-06's and factory loaded Remington 180g Coreloks. Every shot has exited except a few which came to rest just under the skin on the far side. Only one required a second shot and probably was dead on his feet. Shots were from 50 feet to 200 yards.

Rogue, you sound a bit like me. I pick a bullet niche and then buy the rifle best suited to deliver that particular wgt of bullet. Thus, I have shot few bullets other than 165's in my 06, 150's in my .280, 200's in my 300, etc. I don't believe in motoring a rifle at the top end, and I believe a 200gr bullet @ 3000fps is a much more sure killer than a 130gr at 3500. If you get the proper balance between rifle, speed and wgt of metal most if not all the modern bullets will do the job nicely.
