Magnum primers in non-magnum cartridge

I've been hearing a lot about using mag primers in non-mag rounds like the 22-250, 308, 270, 280 etc. Is there any advantage to this? Wouldn't it cause higher pressure (albeit slight) as well as increase throat errosion especially for some of the hotter rounds?
I recall reading an article where the author used mag primers (WLMR to be exact) for everything.

I too use mag primers for all ball powders.

The effect of magnum primers varies in all cartridges. I usually try all kinds of primers at the end of load development. In most loads there is little difference, the majority of the time the standard primers work best and in all but the largest cases usually produce the best accuracy for me.

Do a "Search" here. The subject has been discussed quite a bit in the recent past.

I have used mag primers in cals bigger than .308
Depenging of purpose, filling % and burning speed(type of powder).expl..hunting load, shell is full of quite slowburning powder.
Anyway, use magprims in bigwolyme cals, filling % should allways be quite high.

If a variable like that works for you then good. Let's not mislead ourselves that it's the "magnum" part of it however. It could be the fit of the primer in the pocket for instance or some other variable that has nothing to do with primers.

I use magnum primers about like others do. They work well for me and I have not had any problem with them.

There is nothing to throat erosion with or without any particular primers.

I've used magnum primers when loading slow burning powder in my 260, like one time when I tried RL25, even though the charge was only 50 grains.

I did a little experiment recently with a mid-velocity, mild pressure .22-250 load using surplus IMR 7383 powder. As this is a slow burning powder with the load limited by the case capacity, I wondered if my velocity and/or groups might improve with magnum primers. Substituted CCI 250s for the CCI 200s. Average velocity dropped 40 FPS with the magnum primers, velocity spread and groups worsened.

Others have found the opposite with different combinations. So it's just something you'll have to try and see.
