50-140 sharps 40,000 PSI 157 gr H20 cap,650 gr bullet out of a 28" barrel. Maybe 20 grs less capacity because of seating the bullet. Much appreciated. Thanks "It's like killing roaches - you have to kill 'em all, otherwise what's the use?" Charles Bronson

Quickload suggests a compressed load of I3031, 51 gr, or 55 gr. of RL15. These are max loads, for around 1650 fps. Quickload is notoriously lousy at straightwalled cases without calibration! HTH, Dutch. Life's too short to hunt with an ugly dog.

Ah, Dutch, I think you may have entered the wrong case capacity and/or pressure limit. old4x4, by extrapolating Powley Computer outputs and massaging in some of the data from Accurate's No. 2, I'd guess the charge will be a nearly full case of 4831 or 4350, something on the order of 110+ gn. What barrel length? From that one can get an estimate of fps to watch for on the chronograph. Assuming 28", you should get over 2000 fps at 40 ksi. A smaller charge of RL-15 may work as well, but you may need a filler; however, some reloaders of the old nitro express cartridges blanch at using a big case full of 4831 at lower pressures (see also the threads on "secondary spikes").

Thanks for the info. I was going to have a giant Encore barrel made in 50-140, but may have decided on a 28" 300 Rem Ultra Mag step-up 1 1/4" dia fluted barrel with a brake. I just want a very long range toy. Toy should be in CAPS! "It's like killing roaches - you have to kill 'em all, otherwise what's the use?" Charles Bronson

ASDF, with the 157 gr. capacity and the 28" barrel, Quickload suggests almost 1900 fps. With the deep seated bullet reducing the capacity to 137, it takes it down to the 1650 level. No magic, in that.... FWIW, Dutch. Life's too short to hunt with an ugly dog.

Huh? I too own a copy of QuickLOAD. What pressure did you use. I entered 35,000 or 7/8 of the nominal 40,000 old4x4 asked for; the 7/8 is the usually fudge factor QL uses. Even using the higher shot start pressure for jacketed bullets (I had assumed a lead bullet), one still gets over 2050 fps with a net case of 136 gn. My copy is v.2.9, which is several years old. Has there been some major changes?

Don't know. The biggest issue would be the "efficiency factor", and I kept it at .7 (i.e, 70% of the powder moves into the bore). As straight as that case is, that should be about right. I put pressure at 40,000, so I don't know what the issue is. The vagaries of simulation, I suppose. FWIW, Dutch. Life's too short to hunt with an ugly dog.
