So there I am, shooting some hand loads from a bench rest for my .270 win. 50 gr of h4831 on a 150 gr sierra gameking bt spitzers. All cases trimmed to 2.500". fed 210 primers. at 100 yards I am getting 2 very nice 1 inch groups. 1 at dead center bulleye the other at 2 inches low 2 inches right. The groups are formed together with random shots landing in the each respective group. That is, 1st dead center 2nd low-right, 3rd dead center, 4th low-right. This continues for 20 rounds spaced about 30 seconds apart. The rifle is a win model 70 that is abouy 5 years old. I have shot plenty of factory ammo through it in the past with good consistant 1" groups. What the heck is going on?

Something is probably loose. Internal to the scope, the scope mount, rings, stock screws, etc. Frank "I don't know what there is about buffalo that frightens me so.....He looks like he hates you personally. Hey Bigguns45, Maybe that is one of those "Special M70s" designed for shooting two Deer standing side by side at 800yds. Only kidding. Gotta agree with Frank about something being loose. It could be inside the scope, the rings and bases, or perhaps the stock is fractured where the recoil lug sets. All are fairly easy to check, put on a different scope and check the Rings and Bases while doing that. Take the rifle out of the stock and with a very strong light over your shoulder, try twisting the stock while watching the Recoil area. When you put it back together, put the Stock Screws in loose and then set the rifle on the recoil pad so the barrel is pointing up. Snug up the screw closest to the muzzle and then snug up the one closest to the Recoil Pad. Your M70 probably has one in the middle and it should only be tight enough to keep it from falling out. If you get it too tight, it can put a warp-stress on the receiver. The great news is, that whatever it is, it will be relatively simple to find and resolve. Best of luck to you.
