Not stipulated, but since the question deals with the rifle and not the shooter that is how I'll respond. All info below is off a bench and bags. I am capable of 3" 5 shot groups with selected rifles(read-good triggers), standing. Better if I'm sitting or prone. All info at 100 yards...50 yards is not a valid litmus for a rifle IMO. All use handloads except the T/C Carbine and 10/22.

Ruger 77/44 - 1.5"
Ruger 77, .358 Win. - 1.5" or better, depending on load
Ruger #1, .257/.22KH- .75"
Model 94, .30-30 - 3"(50 yds- < 1")
T/C Carbine .30-30 - 1" +/- a wee bit
Ruger 10-22 .22LR - 1-2"(50 yds-10 shots in .5")
J. Pire .405 Win - 6" for now. Loads under developement.
700ADL .22-250 - .7"

Hummm....

It would be easier for you to go to http://stevespages.com/targets.html

I have several listed there...with all the important data.

Steve-where's your server when I need it??

Well, my hopes rose yesterday when the server went down. you see, I am in Montana and my server is in California. When the server died I had visions of sugar plums dancing in my head...I actually thought that California dropped off into the Pacific!

But...(with great disappointment) I found out that at around 15:55 PST there was a power surge in the area that my server is located, and it knocked 1000 servers belly-up!

QWest has informed me that they are working on the problem. Well, "working" is being very liberal! They have restored the power, but they decided to assign ONE MAN to reset all 1000 servers.

It is obvious that I was not #1 on their list, and hopefully I am not #1000! They said most of them should be operational (baring any hardware disasters) in a couple of days...

So...tell me how much you miss me!

Collins,

I will give you a list of guns, and their accuracy off
my bench, with me pulling the trigger. I am not
an "average" shooter(I shoot often, and I have had some
shooting technique instruction), and most of my
guns, at a minimum, have had trigger work, and I have
tuned the loads for each rifle. I believe the
average shooter takes the out of the box "deer" rifle to
the range, shoots a few rounds to check zero, maybe a
few more off hand practice shots, and then maybe a few
shots during the season, at game. From the brass pile,
setting by my tumbler, I shoot a lot more than that
So I am not sure if these numbers are "average", but they
are my averages.

Howa 1500 300WSM, 165 gr TSX, ave. 5 shot group - .9"

Tikka WH .25-06 Rem, 100 gr TSX, ave. 5 shot group - .75"

Savage 16 .22-250 Rem.. 55 gr NBT, ave. 5 shot group - .75"

AR-15 20" RRA Varminter barrel .223 Rem., 55 gr NBT,
ave. 5 shot group - .6"

AR-15 16" RRA chrome/moly barrel, .223 Rem, 55 gr. NBT,
ave. 5 shot group - .9"

Browning BAR, 308 Win., 150 gr Hornady SPBT,
ave. 5 shot group - 1.25"

Remington 760, 30-06 Sprg, 150 gr Hornady SPBT,
ave. 5 shot group - 1"

I hope this helps your data gathering.

I've been there (stevespages) but I think all of those numbers are MUCH better than average. I'm really trying to get a number for the new guy at the range with a good rifle and good optics and an hour of training or so. I'd guess it'd go as large as 2"

Sorry, but they are average for me and my guns...

The term average is truly misleading here as previously stated.....I'm not posting my results because I've individually bedded and floated all my rifles and then carefully picked the bullets that shot the best in them. I've used 1 1/2" at 100 yards as a cutoff.....If I can't achieve that I trade it off and a few have been traded for that reason.

I remember a fine M-70 in .300 H&H that went to someone else.......and then a Remington 721 in .300 H&H that shot 200 grain swift A-Frames into a 7/8" group.....that gun has earned a permanent spot in the cabinet. These are the exceptions and should not be considered for the calculation of average.

Good luck on your project.

I'm not too particular. All of my 'light rifles', an FN '06, a Whitworth 308 and a Tweed 6.5, will shoot around 1.25" groups. I stop there as I have yet to shoot at anything over 250yds. My VS's 308 and 708 will shoot under an inch. I practice regularly with a bull bag. Most of the guys I know shoot a box a year, if that. I'd consider them average. They are happy with 2-3" groups. I'd say that would be your average. capt david
