Factory Ammo Bullet Seating Depth

I took my new AR out on Sunday to start breaking in the barrel. Its a Shilen 24" SS 1:8 twist. I was shooting Fed. 55 gr. FMJ factory ammo. It will shoot a great group, about 1/2" with 5 shots, but there is always a flyer. I started measuring the bullet seating depth on the ammo and it varies by up to .02-.03! Could this be the reason for the flyers or the twist. I know it is made for heavyer bullets but had to try what I had laying around. I am seperating the ammo into lots with the same BSD and will retest to see what happens.

Any thoughts?

One more thing that supprised me, this barrel likes to be dirty. I started out cleaning every 20-30 rds. and my groups would open up to almost 1". Dont clean the barrel and groups would stay tight.

Yes, but not necessarily.

Not uncommon at all. All barrels are different, but my .30-06, for example, needs three fouling shots and then is good for about 40 or so but then needs cleaning and three more fouling shots. The difference is remarkable and quick. It goes from a 1/2" group gun to 1-1.5" in just a few shots.

I think most people on this forum would agree that cleaning too much is worse than cleaning too little.

How did you measure the seating depth? From the bullet's tip to the bottom of the case? If so, it's no wonder you get varying lengths. The tips of most standard bullets are not 100% equal. If you are measuring factory ammo you have to do this on the ogive of the bullets.

I agree the nose of a bullet isn`t the best place to measure from, and is only relevent in whether or not the ammo will fit the magazine.
If you measured the base to tip lenght I`m not suprised by the variation. Try a comparator and find the base to ogive lenght, I bet it is much, much more consistant.

Factory ammunition having the seating depth vary by .02-.03 is not unusual. Neither is finding variations to that scale in powder charge, headspace, primer depth, etc.
