Okay, anyone want to take a guess as to were cordite fits into the burn rate comparisons of modern powders. What I am really trying to understand is, if I take the load data for a cordite cartridge, what modern powder would most closely fit that same original cordite charge.

Ross Seyfried says the list of substitutes "begins and ends with RL-15" or words to that effect. He uses some kind of poly filler to make up the volume difference -- this was in a recent "Handloader" article.

I totally agree with Seyfried on this. Having tried 3031 and 4831 I find the R15 allows much easier regulation with proper velocity. Use his ratio of 1gr Cordite to 1.19grs of R15.

Thanks guys. I always felt that 3031 was probably closer to the actual cordite burn rate. I have heard of the Rel 15 conversion before. Rel 15 is definitely more forgiving than the 3031 or the old Rel 12.
