I have a 35 Whelen C&H die with a graduated step in neck sizer bushing for what I believe is for sizing the cases from 30-06. I heard some use 10 grains of Red Dot then stuck into a bar of soap to hold the powder in. Anyone ever done this? I know first thing I'm going to do is Barbie and I will run these through our case annealling machine tonight. I have 500 cases to do. ouch!

I don't have a 35 Whelen but I do have a 358 Winchester and my smith told me to fire 308 loads to get brass for it. Even with old military brass it is successful 90+% of the time. Dan, my smith, said you get a more concentric form than you do by necking them up. I've never had a problem with do it. Speer, Sierra, Lyman, Hornady, Hodgdon have reliable reloading data. You won't find it on so and so's web page.

Duke. I've done it not for the Whelen but plenty of other wildcats. Look at the 400 Whelen threat in big bores. Long about the 13th page they get into blowing the whelen to 400 would be pretty much the same for you going form 06 to 35. Maybe a touch less powder. http://forums.accuratereloadin...43/m/7511088471/p/13 Why not just run the 06 brass over your 35 expander? Save a primer. Tapered expander like the Hornady works better than the stop of the RCBS. I've taken 280 brass to 416 using tapered expanders. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

I have a Tapered expander in a .338 Win Mag Hornady die that I use then my standard 35 Whelen die with a common round expander ball. Never lose a case. If I had a 35 Whelen Hornady Die, that would be all I use. The Hornady Tapered expander is the kitties whiskers. All dies should have them. No need to fire form. dmw "The liberty enjoyed by the people of these states of worshiping Almighty God agreeably to their conscience, is not only among the choicest of their blessings, but also of their rights." ~George Washington - 1789

I use a tapered expander in my 35 Whelen AI, just neck 30/06 brass up to 35cal, load and fire form to the AI case.

Even if you use the tapered expander you still have to fire form the case. I just do it all in one step. Speer, Sierra, Lyman, Hornady, Hodgdon have reliable reloading data. You won't find it on so and so's web page.

Duke's is a std 35Whelen. You don't need to fireform it anymore than you need to fireform 30-06 brass for a 30-06 chamber. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

I've always just run the 30-06 brass into the 35 Whelen FL die. Out pops a 35 Whelen case. I neck size only after that. I've used different brands of brass including military 30-06 and never had a problem.

I have a Remington Classic in 35 Whelen that I bought when they first came out in in the late 80's. I have always just ran 30-06 brass in my Hornady die and fired away. The brass looks better after the first firing but I can see no difference in accuracy and no measured difference in pressure.

I have formed many of the cases by loading about 5 grains of Unique and filling the case with Cream-of-wheat. Seal with a small wad of tissue paper. Firing the load into a STEEL trash can will provide a perfectly formed case. The Cream-of-wheat will "Iron" out the case to your chamber. The dust will be easy to clean out off the bore. I have made thousands of cases for all sorts of calibers using this technique. I would anneal the '06 brass unless it's new brass, first, to prevent neck splits.
