Finally, I get to pick up a new rifle Saturday. It is Savage's Model 14 American Classic in 300 WSM with a 24" barrel and 1 in 11" twist. I have an assortment of bullets in various weights for .30 cal. What is 1 in 11" best suited for? Any pet loads for this cartridge?

In fact the 1:11 twist will handle all the .308 diameter bullets to 220 grains just fine. Most companies use the 1:10 twist but the 1:11 is fine and will work just as well.

I don't know how thw WSM is throated, but I'll bet you will probably be most happy with the 180's.

1:11 is best suited for bullets which are 1.485" to 1.626" in length, at velocities over 2800 FPS.

If you are going to keep your loads under 2800 FPS, the bullets that range from 1.238" to 1.355" would be best.

BTH, I've got a 16WW in 300WSM as well. I have had great results w/ 66.5 grains of R22 under a 180 grain NBT for 2940 fps (Win Brass and WLRM primers). You can forget about reaching the lands, the clip is too short in these rifles to allow for it. This rifle will shoot sub MOA w/ the above load (Usually around .6 for 3 shots). My bbl is pretty fast compared to the Data manuals so, your mileage may very.

I also had pretty good accuracy w/ 150 ABs over 70 grains of H4831. The 180 NBTs have been the most consistent. I tried 165 HCs, 150 &165 SSTs, and 180 MKs w/ several different powders and couldn't get the groups that the R22 180 NBT loads produced. Every rifle is diff. so you may find something diff for yours. I would definitely give R22 or H4831 w/ some 165s or 180s a try if I had to work up a load for another 300 WSM today.

Good Luck

Oops!!!! I goofed. It is 1 in 10" twist...my bad. Savage chambers the .270 WSM with 1 in 11" twist. I'd like to stay in the 165 grain range if possible.
