I was doing some load testing today for my Sauer 202 270 WCF and found that a load using 150 gr Hot Cor bullets printed the best. I am going on a hunt to Oklahoma next week on a deer hunt and am wondering if anyone has any experience with Hot Cor bullets on deer size game?

Hey Jeff, It sounds like you do not have a whole lot of "Practice Time" with the 150gr Hot-Cor in your 270Win. It is best to create your own Drop Chart using the specific Load and specific rifle you intend to use - at the actual distances you plan to take shots at Game. Basically I'd encourage you to take shots at Game only at the distances you have actually practiced.

It is not a good idea to sight in at 100yds, create a Drop Chart from an External Ballistics Program, and hope it is "close enough". We currently have one Fool on the Board that actually recommends that ignorance. Do not be mislead by him.

As for the 150gr Hot-Cor, if you stick it through a Shoulder, either going in or coming out, it will do just fine.

I am not quite following most of this post.

I have been to the range for "practice time" 9 times in the last 3 weeks and have shot at 50, 100, and 200 yards and grouped 3/4" at 50, 1 1/4" at 100, and 2 1/2" at 200 yards consistently. Most of my shots in OK will be under 100 yards.

All I really want to know if Hot Cor bullets will kill a deer, but thanks for advise.

Yes, Hot Cor bullets will kill deer every bit as efficiently as will any other cup and core bullet. They are well constructed and at normal 270 Winchester velocities, they will perform quite well. Enjoy your hunt. Where are you hunting in OK?

My family has land about 10 miles northeast of Cherokee on the Salt Fork river. I killed a 178" buck on the place in 2004 with my muzzleloader.

My load is 57 gr IMR 7828SCC with Fed GM210M primers in Federal brass.

I am going to try the load on east Texas whitetails in the morning.

Speer's are plenty good for deer. But not if you gut shoot 'em.

I've only used the 145gr/7mm in my 280. They are accurate enough but I find them abit "Soft" above 2700fps impact vel. Stay off hard angle shots & off bone & should be fine.

I have use the 160gr 284" bullets in a 7mm RM. The damage on a 200lbs buck here in Colorado was better than I could ask for. Pencil entrance hole and about a 2.5" exit. Buck went only 10 steps and droped. Jovan

Hot Cor bullets DO work well on east Texas whitetail. She dropped in her tracks with a perfect heart shot at 50 yards.

You're angsting too much. Vern Speer has been making good bullets that kill stuff for a long time. If they weren't good, he (the company) wouldn't still be around. Just load 'em up and if you do your part, they'll do their's.

Best of luck in your hunt. I trust you will be pleased with the performance of the Speer bullets when you harvest your deer.

I grew up in southeast Kansas and had family that lived in Grove until recently. I also have family living in Bartlesville. It has been quite a few years since I was in Oklahoma. Much as I loved the Midwest, hunting is certainly better in northern British Columbia. This has been a good deer season during the past two weeks as I have harvested a couple of fine mule deer and a nice whitetail this morning.
