Well I gave this a try as the load I was working on was a relatively low pressure load, and I though... What the hell? Thing of it is, the damn load shot awesome... now what? Interestingly I was chronographing at the time and the Pistol primers gave about 40 ft/sec less than the CCi BR's. Anyone else ever try this lunacy?  Member NRA, SCI- Life #358 28+ years now! All the time... especially in the low velocity and low recoil loads.. usually try and keep with loads that pressures are estimated to be under 40,000 psi.. One difference between rifle and handgun primers is that handgun firing pins have less energy therefore the primers are thinner and softer than rifle primers. Using handgun primers in a rifle therefore risks primer penetration !! Primers like any other variable may give different results for different brands. | |||

I use LP in my cast bullet rifle rounds loaded with R/D. They are all very low velocity rounds in the 1400/1500fps range w/R Dot powder. I started using them because I had no LR primers at one time and had excellent accuracy results and have stuck with them since, but only for these loads. I use them in the 30-06, 8mm Mauser, 8x56M/S and 35 Whelen with the reduced CB loads only. I've checked all the rifles to make sure they didn't have excess fireing pin protrusion too after the 35 Whelen punctured one on the second shot with an overly long fireing pin that's been adjusted now. No further incidents. | |||

For what it is worth, I am doing the unthinkable and guessing that since I am approximately 3 grains under maximum that my pressures as Seafire points out are below the 40K PSI  The cartridge is the .243 Ackley and the powder is IMR 7828 with a 90 gr Berger BTHP; at least the volume is mostly used up. You'd have to test it, my only reservation would be to wonder if the large pistol primer had enough spark to ignite that much of a slow powder reliably and consistency, shot to shot.. pressure wouldn't be an issue with the load, but reliable ignition would.... Seafire, I ran 20 rounds of this load and it is holding 1/2 MOA or better, though it is still showing a touch of vertical. The reason I choose the magnum version of the large pistol was to light it up. The chronograph shows this load with the LPM primers to be more consistant as to SD (12 vs 17) for std large rifle match. Since later this AM I scored some F215match at a gunshow... I am going to run several different primers with no other variable and see what happens. At this rate soon I will be using cannon fuse and matches... Member NRA, SCI- Life #358 28+ years now!
