I've just started playing with the 40-grain bullets. So far AA-2200 and AA-2230 powders seem to work just a little better than dog squirt! Grouping 3 rounds at 4" to 6" at 100 yds. The very best group was just over 3"! As I said Dog Squirt so far!

If everyone thought like me, I'd be a damn fool to think any differently!
I've used the 40 gr BT's in my 22-250 in front of Varget and regularly get .25" groups and the Rock Chucks and sage rats are paying the price. I have several friends who use these and the V-Max in their 222's, and 223's and they work great and are VERY accurate. Only your rifle will tell you for sure- Sheister
Don't allow skepticism nor stubbornness nor apathy to rob you of the following information:
27.5 grains of VARGET (compressed), Federal 205 primer in Winchester case (Hornady Frontier cases are also good, but don't under any circumstances use Remington cases--except for barrel break-in and fouler shots). Seat the bullet deep in the case, to an OAL length of 2.225". This load is fast and accurate. Try it and you'll see what I mean.
David: I have had very good luck with the 40 grain V-Max in my .223 Remington. I shoot a stock Remington 700 BDL and this is my "walk around" varminter. This bullet is great for the likes of ground squirrels, prairie dogs, etc., but I do have to admit I prefer the 50 grain bullets for use on coyotes.
I have shot a hell of a lot of varmints with the 40 grain V-Max using 28 grains of H 335. This is a max load but one that has been published in lots of manuals and varmint hunting articles. In my rifle it develops around 3650 fps and shoots good groups.
Lately I have been trying Vihtavuori powders and really like the results. They burn really clean and give very consistant results over the chronograph. When I burn up all the H 335 I have on hand I will switch to a load of 27 grains of N 133 for use in the .223 Rem with the 40 grain bullets. This gives just slightly more velocity than the H 335, but it burns cleaner, is more consistant over the chronograph, and seems less temperature sensitive. (The darned H 335 really changes speeds on the chronograph on hot days versus cold conditions.)
These are both maximum loads so work up to them accordingly.

Rem. 700 ADL .223 with a barrel in not so great shape.Shoots under .750 regularly using 40 gr. V-Max over 27.5 gr. AA-2230-C Data powder,Fed.Match primer and Mil.cases. Abe Normal - Use lots of Accurate powder and it works great for me.

W748 and Varget/Green788's suggestion. The W748 shoots very well but is not supposed to be consistant under large temp variations. I can neither confrim nor deny this. I did just moly coat a bunch of 40 grain Vmaxs and will coat my barrel and see if I can get more rounds down range before the group starts to open up. Shooting a $189 H&R Ultra and loving every minute of angle that my High$ shooting buddies cant hang with.

I use 40grs. of W748 with the 40gr V Max. It is hard to get it in the case( use fireformed cases). Had better luck with Win.small rifle primers. Velocity varations were terrible with Fed 205M and Rem. 7 1/2BR. Shoots good in my Win M70 26" @3800. Have seen 4000 with std. primers with 125fps variables. Now more like 50fps with the mag. primers.
Screwed up, should have said had better luck with the magnum primers. The Nosler manual has a load for the 40gr. BT @3900 or so with AA2015....not even close in my rifle.
If your barrel twist is faster than 1:12" then you'll probably be spinning the little 40gr V-Max so fast that any imperfections in the jacket will result in not so great groups.
If your twist rate is 1:12" or 1:14" then you will probably have good results and be sure to try Varget.
I dunno about fast twist being a problem .........my little Ruger stainless has a 1 in 9 I think and it groups 40 gr bal. tips nicely at over 3700 fps .........
