You load a .30-06 in a .300 win magnum?

It blows the floor plate open and throws a bunch of gas and burnt powder in your face. Fills the magazine with burnt powder and stuff. Makes the case look really bad.

You load a .270win in a .30-06 bar?

The action won't cycle and you get funny shaped holes on the target.

You load a .308 win in a .30-06?

Makes a "funny" sound. Again with the floor plate and gas. And the brass looks really messed up.

Well, I've seen .308 Winchester cases after they were fired in .30-06 rifles, and there were NO ill effects on the rifle. The cases simply expanded to fill as much of the forward end of the chamber as they could, which certainly made them "look funny", but that was all.

I also have seen EIGHT .308 Winchester cases from factory rounds which were fired consecutively in a .308 Norma Magnum rifle, again with no ill effects at the back end. The .308 Norma is another H&H-based cartridge. These cases also expanded to fill the grossly-oversize chamber, and allowed no gas to escape. The owner brought the cases and rifle to the shop where I was, and he was just a bit upset because he'd expected to reload the brass from his new rifle.

The rifle was a custom Mauser, and the caliber marking only said ".308 NM" in tiny print.

The .308/.30-06 interchange is pretty common, and usually doesn't harm anything. Naturally, any such mis-matches should be discouraged.

I bet that 06 case had a gash torn right in the side of the case.

So, did it make you stop and think for a bit?

Somewhere in my collection I have some 8x57 cases that were fired in a 30-06 chamber....

They are basically "fireformed" to the 30-06 chamber shape with a really short neck... and made the flattest primers I've ever seen.... but didn't leak any gas

No, I didn't shoot them some other idiot did.

I understand none of these practices are good but how is a 30-06 gonna blow up a 300WM rifle? Other than making you feel stupid, most of these practices aren't as dangerous as they are touted to be.
Will a 30-338 or a .308 Norma fit into a 7mm WM? Now that might be interesting. (altho, except for a terrible kick, I'd bet nothing much would happen. I'll let you pull the trigger tho)

My gunsmith showed me two rifles. Both Weatherby MK V with wood stocks in 270 Wby Mag. Seems the two owners of the rifles went to the range together with a box of 270 Win between them.

One fired a 270 Win in his Wby rifle. The case ruptured, blew the floor plate off and split the stock into 3 pieces.

Then with his partners rifle in peices, the other guy shoots a 270 Win in his Wby. Almost the same drill, blew the floor plate of an cracked the stock (unrepairable). Neither of these two were injured, except for thier pride. There was no damage to the rifle actions, they just need to be restocked.

When this happens, smaller diameter case than what the rifle is chamber for, there is nothing to support the wall of the case so the case ruptures. The gases all try to escape past the bolt. When it does, something has to give.

My brother managed to ignite a .223 cartridge in his 22-250.....The pushfeed M-70 spit the bullet down range and took out his extractor.

I replaced the extractor and the gun is still shooting today.

He did take a bit of gas in the face however.

Had a friend who was shooting my .358 chamber and fire a .243, couldn't understand how he missed! Thought the recoil was light also... case fireformed very nicely!
